[quote="MistyKI know it isnt a great pic but this completely original 70/71S has exactly the same as my K mate.

Maybe you are thinking about English cars that had the flat tops.[/quote]

My freind has 2 original mk1 cooper s's and both have flat top ashtrays?
so thats why i always thought they had them and karcraft sell the flat top ones as cooper s ashtrays

i don't know anymore you have me all confused on the inside

Notice how all you "flat top" supporters talk about Mk1 Ss whereas the pic on page 1 is of an MK2 so maybe thats where the transition occured? BMC trying to rationalise on the need to keep 2 types of ashtrays one is specific to a single location on a single model? Just speculating here.
In the UK all Cooper S's from Mk1 to Mk3 had flattops on the dash.

BTW it might look like nitpicking but the "completely original" Cooper S has the wrong choke and heater controls as well as the wrong gear knob (thus is not the best indicator for what is "stock") - so a very reasonable chance that when the flat top ashtray rusted out the owner replaced it too with what was available.

997, 998 Cooper also both Mk1 and 2 S here all had a flat top ashtray.
2 types, slightly different.

The open type one in p1 pic was used on all the lesser models.
