Needles prefixed 'A' (as in ADE etc.) are all for 1.5" carbs with 0.090" jets

Needles prefixed 'B' (as in BDL etc.) are all for 1.75" carbs with 0.100" jets

Answering the original question - bit difficult without knowing more stuff like is the engine standard? If not what mods have been done (cam, head spec, comp ratio etc.) What air filter are you running? Straight 1098 with no air cleaner try an AAU as a starter.

On my 1062cc (998 based) I just did for the magazine (RE13 cam, standard 1275 small valve head and 1.75" HIF SU) it needed a BBC... talk about rich - BUT the CO meter and hydrocarbon meter said this was right. Goes like stink! Not too bad on fuel either! KC

It'll be in the next (Feb) issue of Mini Magazine. We are covering various engine tuning options as we haven't done anything on this line for a while. This idea behind this one was to deal wit hthe oft-asked question about whether you can fit a 1275 head on a 998 block without pockets in the block for the exhaust valves, what happens when you deeply recess valves into a head, and how much fun can you have with a 998 without spnding a fortune. It was a good excercise. The result was 91bhp a tthe crank - but more to come after sorting the dizzy. I am exprcting to see 95bhp next time around and a better idle. The figures mean nothing without comparison as these seem a little high. I used a new rolling road so took along a standard 998 with me that was stage 1 kitted. It turned 77bhp. A good standard 998 on this rollers gives 60 bhp. So effectively a 50%+ increase over standard - which is amazing. It is EXCELLENT to drive! KC.

My lady thinks it's brilliant fun, and her daughter thinks up any reason at all for having to take the car out. Makes me smile everytime I drive it. It absolute sings along! KC

Whilst the HIF is a slightly better meterng instrument it has two short-comings - the fuel bowl is a little on the small side and that pesky bi-metal strip that controls the jet height according to temperature. Can make sorting the fuelling a little dificult and may lean the mixture off when least required. Both can be sorted with some fiddling. I believe Midel make replacement strips in single metal now and again, and the fuel level can be modified by running a larger flow valve.

The HS6 generally has enough fuel bowl capacity - but if not can be modified by welding a tube on the side of it. It also generally fits with greater clearance.

I use what I have (HIFs) since these are pretty common singualrly over here.
