personally i LOVE 998's. I have owned 1275's, 1098's and 998's. I love 1275's
but i also love my 998s. they just seem to be a nice nippy motor. whereas my
1098 just seemes a littlle flat? but a bit more torquey. nothing to prove this
just my experience

and to prove my commitment. in the rebuild im doin on Leila (the car you came to look at) my 1098 crank is ****ed from that motor so i am gona turn it into a 998 motor now instead. as i have a 998 crank at home. 998's i love them and i would not discount them at all!

should speak to graham russell he has just about to get in the latest spec 998 pistons that are 80 and 100thou oversize bringing the motor upto 1100cc without even adding a stroked crank to it yet.

both keith calver and graham russell did experimental motors and both out performed the 1100cc in all areas.

I find just a head and cam do the trick.

putting in a 1098 crank and pistons doesnt make it a 998 any more its now an1098.

What about putting these 100thou pistons in with a 1098 crank? i imagine graham would have to take a bit off the top of the piston to clear the head, but is it possible? but surely it'd make more power as it'd close to 1275cc..

Graham has 80 thou oversize pistons NOW, I'll bet he is getting these new +.100" ones made for 1098s too.
He loves 1098s. Most maligned motor in the A series world.

Wow 0.100" over .... that wouldnt take TOO much more out of the bore would it ....

can easily strengthen the block again with a little concrete in the water galleries . . . .

But seriously, it wouldnt leave a lot of bore left between 1/2 and 3/4 wouldit . . ..

You can offset them .025" or so as in Vizard's book. I did it back in 1967...:)

Was just looking at that possibility . . .

Hmmmmm

Large Bore, short stroke . . . . large Piston / rod-length raio - nice high intake / exhaust velocities.... Hmmmmm - it be great for a N/A race engine i think... you'd want a VERY unshrouded head, large valves, and some serious compression....

I'd stick with a 998 stroke myself i think, the longer-stroke would upset that nice rod accelleration setup ....

Nice.....

I might even look at doing one of those for myself in the near future just to prove that small bore motors can keep up with big boys.

already done one test with a big motor, time to do it with a smaller one.

Hey, we saw at the Dyno day that a mildly work small block can knock a few 1275's off ;)

specila stuff they put into the block that acts as a coolant so you dont have to run water?
its the way i understand it and its called block concrete.

For drag motors, they used to fill V8 blocks with epoxy.... maybe they're using concrete now..??
Stiffens the block- cooling doesn't matter a rat's when the motor is only running under load for 10 secs or so.
