The Clubman was built in Sydney by Leyland Australia which was owned byBritish Leyland.
If it has an 1100 motor it would have more local content than a Commodore. If it has a 998 it would be less than a Commodore.

there's no such thing as a mass produced australian car, never has been, never will be.... closest you get is something like a Bolwell, Purvis Eureka.. the kit cars

all of our engines came from england didn't they?

The Australian built cars in the 60s-70s had local content above 90% The HQ Holden had about 97% and the Mini had about 92%.

How on earth can a Pervis Eureka be an Australian car? It has a VW chassis and engine, the body is the only bit made in Aus and even then it was designed overseas. Local content... 30%

Why did BMC have an engine factory then?
If the engine no has a Y (like 9Y/Ta/H or 10Y/Ta/H) then that engine was built in Sydney. The 998 in the deluxe and all the 1100s except the autos were locally built. The 1100S motor (1275) was also a locally built motor.

Holden is the biggest lie there ever was in Oz, The commodore right from the start started out as a Opel Rekford then it turned into the Opel Omega which was the VN. Its been a Opel Omega ever since. Just with some different styling cues. Buick V6 was originally a little smaller and obvioulsy carby when it 1st came out in the 60's. Every car Holden has released has been based on a car from overseas. Even the 48-215 FX was designed in Detroit.

And yes I own a VR Commodore as well.....

Ummm, there is a fair bit of local design in the Commodore...... When you think that the car it is designed from is front wheel drive!
So what if the body panels are similar to a German car (from the same parent company) the panels are stamped in Australia which is better than Hyundai or Nissan.

Since we're on this subject , I was once told by a mechanic that the 308 engine design was poached from Buick (again , pattern happening here) , something about the firing order being different from other v8's ? The story I was told was Buick designed and built a motor with the same firing order and gave up on it after a year because it was a poor performer so Holden refined it and used it as "Australia's own V8" ..... Anybody know anything about this or was it someones personal theory perhaps ?

The 308 is quite simply a V8 engine designed to use the principles of the Red 6, the firing order is the same as the Buick because one of the designers had a thing for the buick motor.
The 308 and 253 was designed in Australia.

"Built here......designed overseas.
Most of our minis were Australian made"
Just like a Mini

"the rb 30 was droped cos the motor was to high to fit under the new panle work of the vn
makka"

"VL had the nissan motor which was a big step up for holden over what the car
was used to, but due to the higer cost of import it was dropped for the VN. "
This is true because of the exchange rate!

While we are on the subject of who built what where, id just like to add something, EVERY VR/VS and maybe the VN has a FORD part on it, if you take the clearish cover off the interior light the base of the light actually has the ford emblem on it. so there you go learn something everyday.

Back in the mid 80s the Government came up with a plan for the Australian car industry, it was called the Button Plan after the Labor Senator John Button. His plan was for the local manufacturers to share componants and to share cars.
This is how Holden got the Nissan motor for the Commodore.
This is how Nissan got the Holden motor for the Pulsar.
This is how Nissan Pulsars got sold as Holden Astras.
This is how Nissan got the XF Falcon ute.
This is how....... Toyota Lexan
This is how........ Holden Apollo
This is how........ Ford Corsair

And this is how Holden got the same interior light as Ford.

Don't look too hard, the interior light in a mini was used in a lot of other cars as well!

In the early days Datsun got the rights (somehow) to a lot of the engine and other design stuff of BMCs I guess Datsun / nissan evolved the borrowed engine designs and didn't see the need to change :?:

A datsun 1200 gearbox will bolt up behind a BMC B series block AFAIK the MGB? guys flog the datsun 5 spd boxes because they are stronger that the original item.

Anyway the Datsun BMC thing is in here: http://www.acmefluid.com.au/larry/austinnissan.html
