Well it's well and truly buggered now it's been a shithouse afternoon. Simply oil change has turned into an ordeal.

I decided that i'd try get the housing off to look at it face down as the toolmans pics show so I could get the seal in properly as nothing I was doing was keeping it place and I was just getting oil everywhere starting it up each time to see if it had sealed properly.

Began to unscrew the pipe going into the top of the housing and it snapped clean off. Why the F. do they have nut threads there if the pipe snaps so easily?!

Not only that but I had a closer look at the moke and it's filter housing has two bolts going *into* the engine block, the 850 has two threads coming out of the block - the housing is secured by two nuts on these two threads, not only that but there is not enough room to pull the housing off because there's a bar behind the grill blocking it! I'm guessing it can only come off with the engine out.

So, afternoon of hassles and i'm left feeling like an idiot now with an undriveable car to show for it. Somebody up there is determined to make any small job I do hell :(. I'm guessing my best bet is to have the thing towed to link and fork out the dollars (again) for a simple oil filter ... is it even going to be convertable to spin given it's two different bolt in methods?

**** i'm so broke .

:D :D

Hey...lets see a smile...welcome to the "broken and I did it all by myself club".....everyone on this forum has been there and done that :!:

Well....to the problem....ya maybe should have left the transfer pipe alone and worked out why oil was pissing out the filter first.....but never mind....go to a wreckers or another engine and rip another transfer pipe off....

If you want to convert to a spin on oil filter like the Moke, than you may need the studs or bolts that came from that engine...too easy 8)

Keep at it mate :D

Sorry to hear it all went pear shaped.. :( Since you've got it that far, either take the hosing and filter somewhere, and get'em to look at it, no point taking the whole car, or do as 9YaTaH says and try to get one of them new fangled screw on types while your getting your transfer pipe, that way, it will eliminate problems next time you come to do it. I've not put mine back together yet, but hopefully I'll not have the same probs as you did.

I can't take the housing off as there's a big metal strip that the grill rests on right infront of the filter. The filter is about 2 and a half inches long with about an inch gap between the end of the bold thread and the metal strip so I can't see it coming off ?

Sounds to me like you should just fix the existing set up....even tho they are more trouble than spin-ons.

Of course, if you plan to pull the engine some time in the future then have a go at fitting the spin-on unit.

Tilting the engine back? Jacking one end? maybe??

Huge thanks to the toolman who came round today and helped me sort it out. It was the old seal ring that hadn't come out, once you knew what you were looking for it looked all to easy. Was missing a washer on my filter and a rubber which he donated along with an oil supply pipe till I can get him one once the mini places open!

Took it for a test drive and she/he's (i haven't decided yet) not leaking any oi!

wooh thanks mate!
