I think it has to do with gear ratio more than the throw Anton. Mk2 Cooper S ratios are closer together in 1st 2nd and 3rd and allows you to "put em away" at the lights  as apposed to being caught up after 1st gear?? someone want to enlighten us on this?

I find my first gear is way too short. by the time the engine is screaming it's lungs out, you're only doing 20kms/h (or at least it seems that way!) To really get away i need to rely on 2nd...

Gap between gears on a Mk 2 S box, 1-2, 2-3, are same as Mini K or rodchange, but 3-4 is closer. But 1, 2 & 3 on the S (or GT) are all 1/17th faster than a K etc is.

I'd hardly call my Mk2 S box `close ratio'.

Anton, if the throw is too long, get the hacksaw out... you know you want to...

Must be time for an SCCR or maybe an ultra close ratio gearbox.
Might as well go for the six speed since you're opening the wallet. :D
Must be pops channelling through JAM.

lol....

Yonks ago I bought a 308 Commondore for $3000. It was MINT. Last reg in QLD. Had a HQ stroker 308 and Corvette close ratio box. Gear changes only dropped the RPM by 500

This thing FLEW!!! Sadly, in NSW the RTA stated the motor was 'too old' for the vehicle.......I had to sell that motor. The buyer wanted a good 308 for his work ute. "Is it worked? I don't want a worked motor" he said.

"Nah mate...stock as a rock" I told him.

It was going in his plumbing work ute

I have a clubman rodchange box, same as JAM i am pretty sure.

Maybe you're all right, people do tend to hassle me more when I am in the mini. Even like middle aged women! i swear it's like "Oooo look a mini! haha watch this I'll overtake it" :?

Thankfully with my GR head and dellorto I can put some of them away! 8) :P

Just get a remote box & chuck that boat anchor away.

Next time you go for a drive-Practice"double-clutching" between 1st and 2nd.You get quicker and quicker, and then you get so use to doing this, that you do this automatically between all the gears, whether you are changing up or down......

anyone care to explain the point of double clutching when going up through the gears?

I can't see what it would do? why are you doing it?

When you go down the gears, you double clutch to save the syncro's and put less load on the box by matching the revs..ie.. clutch in, neutral, clutch out, increase revs to match lower gear speed (clutch needs to be out or engaged so that the gear speed increases rather than just reving the engine with the clutch in), quickly put clutch in and select lower gear trying to time it with the correct revs...

So going up a gear you want lower revs, what is pumping the clutch twice going to do? :?: or are you revving too? if so why would you want more revs?..i'm a little confused..

I guess the nitty-gritty of this method is that it slips into gear a lot easier and quicker.
I,ve just carried this method over from driving trucks...and my understanding is that it's a lot gentle on your gearbox.
If you want to know the ins and outs and more technical stuff,do a search on google under
Double-Declutching.
