Ok I guess I'm suggesting that if you start with a 998 you'll have a small, fragile (relatively) motor that you'll spend lots of money on and screw the bollocks off to get any real performance. Anything you might do to the 998 you can do to the 1275 with a commensurate better result. Or, do less to the 1275 and get a less stressed, cheaper motor but the same power.

Its somewhat of a coincidence that my engine also puts out around 75 hp. The difference is that its 1330 cc and naturally aspirated. Its gets over 45 mpg day in day out and still has the same pistons, rings, bearings, and valves as it had in 1990. in fact the only new bits its had since then are valve guides and timing belts.

As the old saying goes...there's no substitute for cubic inches..

Cheers, Ian

Thanks Ian, that clears it up, I just wanst sure who you were talking to...

As an Engineer, i fully agree with you, screwing 18+PSI Boost into a 998/110 is a LOT of stress to put on any engine, and the same power output could be had for around 10Psi on a larger capacity engine....

So, If costs to rebuild are similar and power outputs would be similar, the only difference will be the stress / longevity factor of the engine.

Scales tipping towards Big Block .....

James,
Ir'll cost you the same bucks pretty much, whether to rebuild a small bore or big. But as said, the big bore will have better reliability as you are not screwing the tits off it. And it will have way better torque off-boost.

If a turbo 1275, I would NOT use Hepolite 8.8:1 pistons (21251) in it, they are too fragile for this use.

Well, I've been thinking about it all day ....

Had a conference with the Minister of Finance....

She agrees with all the points raised, and posed one back to me ....

"Havnt you always been a bit different to everyone else ?"

To which I had no answer.... yep, where others went Metro Turbo, I went Custom...
When others go Big Block, I stuck to Little smallies....

So, For the moment, i think I"ll stick the the small block, build a real screamer...

BUT I'll start with a fresh block I think.... and do some "interesting" stuff, that no-one else is doing, and just stay "over the curve" .....

Thanks for the info all, its been a great debate.... I'd love to see more of this kind of stuff on Ausmini !!

Keep an eye on the For Sale thread for a Running 1275 / Gearbox combination ! (Maybe.. then again, I may just store it for "Later" .....

But the screamer will cost a few $$$ .. the 1275 shoule go a long way to paying for that!
