A friend of mine bought a NEW Morris 1100 back then, it used a pint in 400 miles during running in. BMC said that was not excessive.
I reconditioned my son's Clubby 1098 motor as few years ago, using NOS BMC boxed pistons- and it then used NO oil to speak of, it's done around 5000 miles now (but body presently being refurbished).

2 things matter on these motors to reduce oil consumption, IMO-
1. decent valve guides, valves and seals (use 1275 metro ones)- replace valves & guides if worn.
2. Piston fit- if clearance is excessive (bores honed too big) it WILL use oil. Clearance at bottom of skirt should be only .0006" -.0012" according to the manual.

ok well its good to hear from some1 who has had first hand experience with running these things in.. i reckon its probrably used about 1 and a half to 2 pints in total already (1700miles) the bloke that did the rebore and supplyed me with the pistons didnt mention nething about gapping the rings but they were alreay gapped so i assumed he'd already done that so that all i had to do was reassemble the enigne because thats what we asked him to do regind the crank rebore and set it up so i just had to reassemble.. so im convinced its the valve guides. the minis previous owner was a granny but i dont think she had it service all that often and maybe even had a grand son who thrashed the crap outa it before she sold it to me.. it hadnt had regular oil changes cos the sump was almost fully black inside when we took the motor off.. i will definately get those guieds seen to i hate spending money on oil every 2nd or 3rd week!

Hmm - agree with all above but I think you may have not hit it hard enough in the run-in. I would look at the build side with the person who rebuilt it. Run it in as you drive it normally - my falcon 4.1 has just ticked over 1000km and I have given it a caning - hasnt used a drop of oil(cross flow falcon)since. If you mollycoddle the run-in - the car will run like it is being mollycoddled.

Run in hard - will drive hard...

My opinion only

Hooroo

haha funny u should say that coz i must admit i couldnt help my self a few times and did give it a thrashing with some mates... but otherwise i just drove it normally like as if you were just driving to work on a normal day.. so im confused.. maybe i should thrash it sum more to get the rings to bed themselves in more.. watd u rekon?

the hone has probably worn off by now,
the idea is not to thrash it, but do give the rings an oppertunity to be bed in against the hone before its polished away

its a possibility, but an unlikely one compared to the valve guide's and seals
