Another question, would one of the 40mm side draft webbers that xtrememini has for sale be suitable? Or is it too small?

OK for a roadie 1275... bit small for 1380, IMO.

A 40 DCOE or DHLA will work, but you can't really run bigger than 34 chokes in it- a bit small for a 1380 I think.
Although many 45s do only have 34 chokes fitted. But with these you can fit bigger ones if the motor is big or has good breathing... like mine does now! :P 8)

I take it that your Mini is running a 1380?

Have you had a problems with it?

I've read and been told both good and bad about them.... :?

Mine's a 1310 running a 45DHLA. Had 34 chokes in, but now has 36's.
More power, all the way up... :P
Motor has a lot of mods though.

Nothing wrong with 1380s except it's hard to bore them any further once they're worn.

So, I'm building a 1360 soon... 8)

Doc have you seen Vizard's setings for Dellortos? He recomends all the way to 40 chokes for a very hot 1275 and as high as 38 for a mildly modified one.

His mains recomendations are 170 - 200 too.

What do you reckon?

Yeah, I got the book, but he's talking race motors for chokes that big.
Des Hammill's book says use 36 or 38, 40 only for racing (if it works).
My jets etc are straight from Des's book and they work great (in mine..)

Most people seem to fit 45's with 34 chokes for the road, and Graham Russell reckons for short tracks eg Wakefield Pk, 34s are best.
I haven't had mine round there since I changed it.

I think it depends how much head work the motor has, how much cam, how big it is etc- but don't go too far or you will f**k up drivability..... 8)

From what I've heard Vizard tends to be a bit over enthusiastic with choke sizes, if you are running a road motor you would be best to go a few sizes down on Vizard's recommendations. Not that I have anything against Vizard, he is a god afterall, but he is tuning for race motors, like Kevin said!

D'Oh, forgot I had Vizard sitting on the shelf to check against... but I still prefer "human advice", rather than just following a book, you get all arguments for and against then.

I find Des Hammill's book `How to Build & Power Tune Weber & Dellorto' very good for tuning, makes much more sense than the Weber part of Vizard's book. If you have a Weber or Dellorto it's well worth the $40. 8)
Available from www.pitstop.net.au

Yeah, that one is good too- I got it, and the 998 one- but if you want to strip, check, repair and tune Webers or Dellortos, the carb one is better.

Can anyone tell what this one is from the photo?

Or where about is the size/part no. listed on the carby?, as the guy selling doesn't know what carby it is.

Only downer if it's the HIF44, is that he wants AUD$100 for postage!!!!!

Looks like a HIF44 to me. Square flange, and funny looking bum underneath...
