I've been away for a week so I just read your posts.
I probably will take it to a specialist but there have been a lot of things I've fixed so far that I new nothing about before posting a question. I thought fitting rings maybe the same, I just wanted to know what the procedure was then I'll know if it's outer my depth. If money was no object I wouldn't be trying to do it myself.

Its quite testical really.....you need a set of bores appropriately machined so that they are the right size for the pistons and rings you have. If fitting new rings, then you need a ring compressor of some sort and need to very carefully place the rings (spaced at equal sectors around the piston)....then very carefully (using ring compressor) insert pistons and new rings into each bore.

Really, if you have never done it....don't try this at home....get someone who knows what they are doing to show you

I built my first motor from the back of a gregory's manual. Not a very good outcome, I did a lot of hammering I remember.Second motor was much much betterthough.

I would rebuild a nice cheap and plentiful 998 before having a crack at the expensive stuff, but it's not rocket science....

Having a trade background helps though, any technical trade helps really.

Okey dokey,
I will be taking the block to be honed/bored so I will get them to fit the new pistons and rings. Is there any great art to fitting new bearings?
:)

Bearings are a piece of cake except for the cam bearings(when you get it bored/honed, have the shop do the cam bearings too...)

Shell bearings are simple enough and slip straight in but note to you - the thrusts have to go in with the shiny copper bit facing AWAY from the main centre cap(trust me - I did it with this engine I just built - luckily I noticed it before I bolted everything together

Hooroo

Well it's been a while but I'm finally picking up the block from the machining shop, which has been bored 060 thou, decked, ground mains, new cam bearings, big end bearings, main bearings and new pistons and rings fitted.

So I can finally bolt it all back together, how exciting! I've only had the car 12 months!
I'm certainly getting a good lesson in being patient. 8)
