It was very sad to see Barrie's Mini in such a state.....(and looking somewhat different to the photo's!)
I was competing in my first race meet and had by chance pulled up beside Barrie in the paddock. (I was Mini number 13 and also from the ACT)
He was being very much the mentor to me about how it all worked and relieving much of my first time nerves.
After qualifying this put me on the grid behind Barrie - and he had the plan on how we could get the Jag mk2's off the line.
Sadly I was without first gear all weekend and was very much left behind off the line - though catching the tail of the pack by turn 2. Then to come round on lap 2 to have Yellow flags being waved vigorously and see the stricken Mini on the track was not a pretty sight.
It was very welcome to see Barrie OK on Sunday - and already talking about re-shelling.
This accident marred an otherwise great weekend. I have a lot to learn (badly overdriving most of the weekend) but had a fabulous time and looking forward to the next time out.

Ken.

Thanks for the kind words and welcome Ken...good luck in the future....I must say hello at a track sometime, Cheers Mick

PS put Canberra ACT in your profile

9Ya,
Just caught a glimpse of the car leaving the track but it was too quick to get a pic. Nose and right wing was badly crumpled though.
MINImal,
Have a pic of you from Sunday on the edge of the parking area just before being let out onto the track. Was standing on the top floor of the main pit building. You were consistant on the day  but definately not in last place.
I noticed the minis that were competing all had pommy bootlids (extra wide number plate recess) and sliding glass windows. That mean they are imports?

All imported 850 shells were strong and light....pick up a quarter vent door sometime then a sliding window door.....so...racers prefer these bodies.

In Barries case....it is probably an original Cooper (single tank, sliding windows circa 1963/64)

it's for the group NB rules, the cars have to be pre '65 spec, so they run as an early pommy 1275 cooper S, they should have a large number plate recess, sliding window doors, no flares, and only one fuel tank - most of them are aussie deluxes or 850's

correct me if I'm wrong... anyone ?

Correct.
Most of them shell into 850s.

Lots of dicky rules - must be under 1300cc.
No synchro on first gear.
Must be remote gearbox.
Stupid interior rules too.

Yeah, Historic Motorsport ROCKS I love it 8)
Much better than the V8 Supercars in my opinion.

970 S, 997/998 Cooper, 1071 S all preceded the 1275 :D

The '64 Pommy 'S' came with a single tank as standard, but the right hand tank was an option and therefore allowable under Nb. Most Nb cars however, run a single tank to keep the weight down.

I beg to differ here - because all the interior must remain intact (floor carpets can be removed) the cars retain their integrity (and value), and don't become gutted out sports sedans. It also means they can be more easily be road registered or 'club plated' for road use.
There are also a few historic racing Nc Cooper S's around (65-71?). They use the Aussie shell and have a completely diferent set of rules with less restrictions.

Went and helped Bazza do a few things like whip the doors off today. I think the car is well and truly repairable....the floor jumped up a little, parcel tray distorted and lowered steering column has been damaged.

All adjustable suspension seems largely unmolested.

Engine lost a Dissy (bent the whole casting), clutch cover has been fractured where the Gemini starter motor was attacked and one of the rocker cover posts was bent over. Engine should be fine with any luck.

doesn't even look like it bent the subframe.... he'll be back on the track soon enough, out to get that bloody EH. One of those buggers ran into the side of one of the bricks at historic winton last year and knocked him out of the race with a broken wheel

EHs are fine Sime.....we have a couple of fine examples here in the Nations Crapital run by the Harris's.... 8)

The guard has been bashed in, floor up, parcel shelf damage....all point to the rear of the front subframe also getting a bit of twist. Barrie has another one he is going to check against. The front valence is trashed but may be saveable by a little beating....as I said today....it don't have to be perfect to get back on the track :!:

Car is very early...... 11 1962 on the wiper motor.

OK...everyone can see the damage above....imagine the guard removed and you are left with a shell that has had a hard whack to the lower floor area.

Anyone had any experience with pulling out this sort of damage :?:

I would imagine you would drill a couple of holes to allow maybe a couple of flat sections of steel (say 1/2 inch flat) to sit in the bottom corner (one inside, one outside like a sandwich) which you could bolt through to attach chains for the necessary purchase.

The main concern is that the shell in that bottom corner is strong....but....the floor/firewall panels are relatively thin (1-1.6 mm).

I know Charles Gruber had a hit going back a few years (2001 I think, t-boned a XW Falcon) on the same corner of the car. It pushed the floor up too and they managed to repair it. Maybe have a chat to him, i think he is running an XU1 now?? :)

If your dropping out the subframes, its actually not that expensive to pull the shell onto a trailer and take it to a sympathetic panel beater who has jig. They will pull the shell straight very efficiently and it will be truely square.

They will also use theie tools to cut through the spot welds on the guards and nose section more efficiently than you can with a drill and a grinder.

They even offer to do it for the sake of some publicity of some sort. Its good apprentice teaching stuff.

Leave the subframe in and take it to a panel shop with the facilities to pull back into shape. The subframe gives them something to attach to and pull straight
I did this with my Nc mini after a similar incident. The LH wheel was 2" back. Rack was bent and floor pushed in. New front panel and LH guard was needed. The wheel alignment after pulling was less than 1 degree out in camber and caster.
