I and many others change the oil a bit more often, like every 1500 miles (2500KM) and the filter every 3000 miles (5000KM).
Oil is the cheapest thing you can put in a Mini motor for insurance, I have seen what happens if you leave it go too long.
It ain't a Toyota you can ignore until you sell it..... as many do.

Sherman67 - any chance of you posting a picture of your sump plug after 7000kms? I'd be interested to see how much metal is stuck on the magnet.

I just dropped the oil after 3000kms running Formula R, mainly Sydney driving (i.e. 998 keeping up with Sydney traffic) and a couple of long freeway runs. There was almost no metal stuck to the end of the magnet. 8)

If others could start posting pics of their sump plugs and details of the driving (# of kms, conditions, etc) we could all settle the argument on whether oils aint oils.

Ok well i've got a leak. Seems to be either coming from the oil filter housing or the rocker cover. Will pull them both off (oil filter and housing and the rocker cover) and put new gaskets in, and some new rubber seals where the rocker cover bolts go in. So no report on usage, ahahaha, cause it used around a litre and a 1/2.

Penrite HPR40 is OK but don't try anything thicker, like HPR50. That stuff (40W/70) is so thick the primary gear stuck to the crank, and we couldn't get gears... with the clutch in. :x
We had tried it in a worn out Clubby motor that was drinking oil like a fish..

For engines in good condition, in road cars I reckon HPR30 is the go, if you do like Penrite.
I used to use it....

Well I change my oil as per Kev's schedule. Plus Lillee chews through 400-500mls of oil every about 300kms or so due to tired rings/heavy fanging (I don't drive Lillee like an old lady  )

Change oil often, you can never change it too often and the frequency of your oil change routine should only be limitted by your budget

ok then, so is Edge 25-50 the same as Formula R? is it still safe to use? or is it only a name change :?

Should I now be looking at another oil to replace it?

I have only ever had Formula R in my motor from new :)

Yeah it's pretty much just Formula R 25W/50 repackaged into a shiny bottle... so Graham Russell told me.
I will still use it.

I think EDGE is the same. There may be a different detergent additive but I think it will be much the same as Formula R. On that note, no Repcos that I have seen this weekend stock Formula R. All they have left is EDGE 25W50 for $34 which is pretty good at 25% off.

I also used HPR30 for quite some time and it is top quality stuff. But I honestly think it is alittle too thick. I noticed that Lillee runs alot better on Formula R but it could just be my imagination
