Seeing as how the establishment is somewhat bereft of funds at the moment - embezzle away!!
At least it wouldn't be far to walk from Secret Harbour to Port Kennedy when the hydraulic Citroen springs a leak and bleeds to death on the side of the road. . .not that that's ever happened to me, of course

It must ba little like the castle around there.

Daaaaarrrl, I need the keys to move the 1966 Morris Mini Deluxe so I can get to the 1975 Mini Moke so I can shift the 2005 Citroen C2 VTR to get to the 1970 Citroen D Special to shift the 1998 R34 Skyline GT-t so I can take the 1986 Suzuki Alto RS-X to work

Nah - much easier than that - mainly because the Skyline the C2 and the '66 Mini are the only ones that actually go at the moment. . .

Well, it wasn't originally - the rest of the car is a bit too good just to throw away.
But as time goes by, and the projects, mount up - possibly a 543cc Mini could be on the cards!

Easy question for those in the know. . .

On a MkII S, should 'YG2S4' be stamped on the radiator shroud as well as the chassis number - or should only the chassis number be there?
This is for one of the pre-ADR MkII's which had no compliance plate. . .
I had been reliably told only the chassis number should be there but have since seen two MkII S's with both the number and the YG2S4 code stamped in.

Any help would be appreciated.

The first of the Mk2's produced from May 1969 through to December 1969 had no ID or ADR plate fitted , and yes that is correct , they had the type and car number stamped into the top of the radiator shroud eg : YG2S4 501(the first Mk2 produced) . They USUALLY also have M206 stamped on firewall behind master cylinders and also the car number , but not all cars had these last two stampings . From sometime in December 1969 , exact date is unclear , they where fitted with an ADR Compliance Plate riveted to the box section of the firewall, just below the master cylinders . Mk2 car numbers started at YG2S4 501 in May 1969 through to the last Mk2 , YG2S4 2919 in July 1971 . Hope this helps in your identification ...cheers Alan

Thanks for the concise info! :D
So what about for the cars fitted with a compliance plate? What should be stamped on the radiator shroud? Just the chassis number or the YG2S4 code aswell? Our car may have had a compliance plate - it's a bit hard to tell at the moment with all the old paint and grot in the engine bay  When I've had a chance I'll clean things up and see if there's any rivet holes below the master cylinders.

Mk2 Cars fitted with a Compliance Plate also have the Type and Car number stamped into the radiator shroud , this applies to Mini K as well as Cooper S . The stamping on the radiator shroud is sometimes very hard to see , especially the Type (YG2S4) , a coat of paint will often hide it as it seems to be very lightly stamped on some cars , but very pronounced on others , maybe some where Monday cars as 9YaTaH suggests ....lol....The quality control at BMC was not the best . I have owned quite a few Mk2 Cooper S over the years (damn wish I had kept them all) and they all had the stamping on the radiator shroud panel . My friend has a 5/70 Mk2 which he has had from new and it also has this stamping . I will have a look at it next time I am in Perth if you like .Your car has a very unusual colour combination and should look really nice when finished...cheers Alan

nup, other than it was stripped for resto when he found it, and it has all of the MK2 features (plastic heater etc.) as if it was a 'full' MK2, rather than a bitsa MK1/MK2 as most of the early MK2's are.... makes sense that it'd have all the MK2 bits being the first off the line - publicity etc.

I *think* he said it has a MK1 style plate with YKG2S4 stamped on it, so before they ditched the plate - the guy who has it is 100% certain it's authentic...

The BMC plate was deleted in June 69 so the early Mk2 should have the plate.

Thanks Alan. . .I think you may have been aware of this car already - it's currently at MiniCentral and I think Al Munday has made mention of it to you.
Upon forther scratching around, it's obvious that it has had a compliance plate (4 rivets). It has also definately not got anything stamped on the radiator shroud (used paint stripper to get all of the paint off and the metal is unmarked) but it is definately a Cooper S (correct in all the other details).
Looks like someone on the production line had an off day and forgot to stamp the shroud - and made a fair mess of the bulkhead as well.
Is anyone aware of a register for Australian Cooper S's? I guess it would be a fairly difficult thing to do accurately but it would be nice to have.

OAR!! it has been repaired and the repairer forgot to stamp the new shroud with the old number
