I haven't been back on track for this very reason. Last time I was competing at Oran a Cortina rolled and caught on fire (sept 04). It took a long time for the driver to get out and for rescue to arrive, I have video of this, not the actual roll.
I want a cage for two reasons,
- to protect my back in a frontal collision. To do this you need to have a harness fitted at shoulder height to prevent crushing of the spine, the rear parcel tray is a parcel tray, not a seatbelt anchor.
- to limit intrusion from a side on collision. My father got hit from the side back in the sixties in a mini and only survived because it was in the passenger side.
As such, I want to fit a full cage but the RTA said no, without any specific reference to anything that applies to my car. I don't want to make my car a race car only and bolt in/bolt out is never going to happen, who seriously is going to drive a car to the track with the door bars removed?!!
I want to gather some interest in getting motorsport plates, like historic rego, for cars like this. Why should I be forced to trailer my car everywhere when the only thing not 'road legal' is the cage. I don't even have a tow car and the mate that has towed me the last 3 times now lives in Tasmania.
Another point is the drift boys. At their last event at Oran the cops pulled over and defected 28 out of 30-odd competitors. This club is now worried about future entries to events. What does this mean to the general public? Less 'hoons' venting their desires within the safer confines of a racetrack will mean the return to the late night street derbys as regular as 10 years ago!!
I think CAMS should lobby the goverment to get this up.
