OK, I reckon I know the problem. When I did the cut-the-shaft-in-half trick from Visard's book and put counter-sunk screws into the butterfly, it pushed the butterfly off centre a bit. The holes in the butterfly are slightly oversized. One of them in an HIF6 is oval. This allows the disc to centralise in the carb bore when it is loose in the slot in the shaft. Without shaft mods, you wind off the idle screw totally, let the throttle fully closed and then do up the shaft screws. This centralises the disc.
BUT, once you've counter-sunk the disc, all adjustment is now gone and the disk may bind up on the bore before it is totally closed. This happened to mine. It lets air past even when the idle crew is not engaged.
To fix the problem I replaced the usual split-ended countersunk brass screws with stainless button head screws and flat washers. I just loctited the buggers in. Now it's all good.
Let us know how you get on.
