What are the signs of an engine mount going? I thought the engine mounts lasted for ages.

Generally it starts with excess engine movement, which usually starts with the engine steady bar bushes wearing out. My engine moves a huge amount at the moment, because the bracket on the bulkhead where the steady bar attaches has broken off and needs welding. I have noticed, as well as the 'thump' on throttle application, sometimes I hear a loud crack (like I ran over something) when I'm working the clutch. Not a good thing, I think I'll fix it this weekend!

I've heard also that clutch judder can sometimes be caused by bad engine mounts.

Anto.

Release bearing job is real easy, once you get all the bolts out of the clutch cover. Bottom 2 are tricky. I use a 1/2" ring/OE spanner with the ring end heated and bent to 45*.
Works for me...

You heated your spanner?? I bought a $1 Super Cheap spanner, just bent it in a vice :) They do have a habit of snapping though.

The annoying part is that I have lost my custom spanner for clutch end covers, and I'm up for a bearing replacement again!

It was a cheapo (Indian) spanner but had the magic words `chrome vanadium' on it. They are tough stuff, but warm it up in the vice with the oxy and it bends OK, easy peasy.

Ah I see. The ones I used weren't chrome vanadium coz they are the el cheapo ones. I've lost count of how many I've snapped trying to loosen tight bolts etc - hence why I bought a more expensive set!

Thanks for that DrMini, I will have a look at it this weekend.

I was worried that the whole engine might have to come out.

Cheers
Stu

Also, I tack weld the 2 nuts into the engine mounts and then fit the bolts & spring washers from outside. Line 'em up with a #2 philips screwdriver in the holes.

Yeah- I know you CAN buy mounts with `captive nuts', but these mounts are too thick to fit in easily. I bought one last time- never again.
