i had the same topic when i started here, thought the mini was flawless untill i drove it on the f3 and i was getting ready to catch the pistons as they fly through the bonnet, spoke to the mg bloke across the road and he said they are a very weak box, too weak for a 1275 and up so im out of the race

On the F3 in 4th gear the box is doing nothing- it's 1:1 ratio thru it, ie direct drive.
Weak box? Boostedmini on here ran his 1360 turbo on a stocko Mini-K box for over 5 years.
Mk2 S box under my 1360 (125HP approx) has run fine for the last 12 years.
It's all in how you treat it. Dump it at the lights and flat shift 1-2 repeatedly with sticky tyres, sure it'll break. So do WRXs...

:D Doc WRX first pulls the centre out of the clutch and when you put the solid centre clutch in you blow the gearbox instead  the weak clutch was designed to save the gearbox  Subaru thought it was much cheaper to replace clutches than gearboxes

Buztoy,,, the "usual" 5 speed boxes that are avaliable are basically a std box with the 5th gear assy added, so they`re no weaker than std, & in fact have a far larger/stronger leyshaft & bearings as it goes right through the box & is supported at the other end.

There are quite a few "types" of 5 speed boxes avaliable now tho & there is 5 speed boxes with 5th being a 1:1 ratio (in other words no overdrive) they`re typically meant for racing purposes tho.

a std 4 speed syncro gearbox can handle approx 180hp for short squirts with no dramas & will happilly handle 100+ hp for long periods of time

i very much doubt that many people out in the "Average Joe" mini world have over 100hp, let alone 180

& most often the boxes that you hear that give trouble are old worn stuffed ones &/or have allready copped a flogging from being fitted under a race donk for a while & / or have simply not been built well/properly, &/or have had crud/sh!t go through them from some other stoopid internal disaster caused by some other stoopid arsed wally pretend mechanic who thinks he/she knows all about how to build mini power units.

ok,,,i`m done, just got back from squash fixture finals , still buzzing, i`ll have a coffee & a few packets of monte carlos then clean my teeth & i`m off to bed :-)

Don't you listen to your parents?

Don't you know parents always know whats best for their children!

You are a very naughty boy for not taking notice of your father!

After all. He more than likely has many years of experience in life and dealing with people.

I think you need to be punished for being dis-obedient and dis-respectful.

Now report to the dungeon and await further instructions.

It is possible to fit the morris 1500 5 speed box gearset into a rod change mini box housing with some bearing mods , but you've got to find a good 1500 5 speed to start with . I should be talking to the guy who did a few about 20 years ago in the next month or so , I'll get back to you with the details .....

Hey Sports, I was just wondering if you ended up getting in contact with this fellow. I have a Morris 1500 5 speed in half decent nick and am looking for more information on this.

So the 5speed boxes are just std 4spds with a fifth gear added......how much would it be (approx) to just add a 5th gear to your std 4speed box then??? considering this is what the 5speed boxes really are (thats wat i have understood neway)
cheers

3.44 diff which late mini's and Cooper S's had does about 110kph at 4000rpm. As said before many Mini's can't accelerate all that well with that diff anyways. It jsut amounts to how much power and torque your car has. Sorry but the stocko 850s are not designed for high speed. Imagine an 850 or a stock 998 with anything higher than 3.44, it would be gutless.
