There's a pommy website with a whole stack of pictures of a shorty mini that was for sale.. The conversion they say is as easy as
"Remove the roof
Shorten the car by 2 Feet
Weld in 3mm x 2" x 1" Steel box section along the top of the body, down the A Post and through the inner sill.
Weld in new one piece body sides
Cut the floor by pie cutting and seam weld it together
Weld in new outer sills
Respray the car
Retim the car."
http://www.justinbanks.com/12-Main.html
There was also an article in MiniWorld Nov '02.. Was Kevin Palmers car, shortened 40", 13" wheels 8) , Metro 1275, and he reckoned it drove better then his Cooper Sport :!:
I dont believe he changed the body sides at all... 'Cut deep into the A-posts to remove the the A-panels and also back into the B-posts.' also 'included some chassis repair sections up the A-pillars to give the whole sturcture support'
I was also thinking about that conversion.. but was hoping that someone else in Oz/qld attempted it first

In UK apparently you can register any bloody thing provided it passes MOT.

Out here in NSW I reckon the RTA would have a field day.

Maybe in SA or TAS...?? :P

I am recently informed from a native that you not required to register vehicles over 30 years old in UK!

There was no road tax for cars over 30? years old.. but I think it may have changed when Tony Blair got in....???

As of 5 minutes ago via MSN to Birmingham, the word is that rego for vehicles over 25 years is still free but they still require the yearly MOT inspection clearance. [the inspection costs round the 35 pound mark I'm told]

There used to be a rolling exemption from road tax for 25 year old or older cars. But this was frozen in 1998 or 1999? to be pre-1972 only. As far I am aware the rolling exemption has not been reinstated since. They have no club/historic plates system over there. You can drive your pre-72 car tax exempt whenever you like! :D

I saw a funny cut and paste years ago in NZ. two front ends back to back. Quite an engineering feat as both sets of steering and engines worked and it cound be driven by one person with the other end steering locked, or by two steering. With both drivers on left or right hard lock the car crabbed down the road. I doubt it was road legal, but a great showpiece all the same. with 2 drivers they did a syncronised driving display to show just what it could do...crazy

yeah... there was a vid on here a while back of an old fiat or something, with the same deal... except I think iwasnt 2 fronts... just had been hacked to fit the second fwd system in the boot... I got a vid at home if anyone wants to see it.... funny stuff.
anyway... point of this msg was to say that there is a 6-wheel sedan mini sitting out on the road near here... its a sign for a panel beaters.... I went and had a look at it the other day... its completely stripped, and appears to be extended using box section. there is no boot and no rear seat, but if I remember correctly, the subgrame is still there... dunno if it ever drove or not.
might go ask em about it... get some pics for u guys.
