i think the thing that makes the divide between real mini owners and BMW MINI owners is BMW itself with its crappy advertising and the actual size of the car not being mini, the luxury car pricerange, taking the cooper name and taking credit for the monte carlo rally wins on their website etc.

thumbs up for the JC works kit though..
but by this time of the classic mini's development it was a serious contender in races and rallies, but the current model is seriously outgunned by the golf GTI and the alfa romeo 147? etc.

True , but remember also that at that time the mini was so much more advanced than the other cars and winning because of it . The new MINI is similar to most of it's contemporaries in many ways (small , powerful and front wheel drive but held back by luxury interior , i.e. weight) , not a revolutionary design like the old one was (front wheel drive , wheel at each corner and good power to weight ratio against rear wheel drive , sluggish performance and expensive ....) . It's much the same as ford using the gTHO's to advertise base model shopping trolley or taxi falcons ....

Fair enough. My use of rabid was OTT but I find the negativity annoying. Which is why I posted the news about the advertising campaign on both mini2 and mini-mods but chose to give this place a miss.

I can see where you're coming from poki , most people don't realise that if Rover had been like any other manufacturer then the mini would have been updated to be just another generic front wheel drive Suzuki or Mazda or similar , most likely be bigger and have all the gadgets that open and shut . Fortunately Rover wasn't like that and they stuck with what worked , i.e. the original mini for around 40 years . It's just the MINI is such a huge step from the original (imagine if Toyota had kept the early 70's two door shaped corolla up until 2001 and then changed overnight) it's going to take a while for the enthusiasts to accept it . If we bicker amongst ourselves though then we'll all lose out , I know a fair few MG people who still don't accept any MG's from the MGB onwards because they weren't true sports cars , they were mass produced convertibles , they stand by their arguments but in the end they just look ridiculous ....

My very first car was a 1968 KE10 corolla. First model ever produced. Paid $350 for it, owned it before I even had my learners permit and rebuilt it with my father. 6 months after getting my drivers licence I spun it out and wrote it off, putting it on its side. I drove a hire corolla 12 months ago and there is nothing except the name that would indicate that the two cars had anything in common.

Like you say though, we all lose out with the bickering *but* unless someone stands up to the loudmouths who just have to let us know how they wouldn't own a BINI if you gave it to them, then things around here will never change.

At the end of the day this is just like any conversation anywhere , be it in a pub , a cafe , a loungeroom or anywhere , people are allowed to say what they would or wouldn't drive , it doesn't neccesarily mean they don't think the MINI should have been produced (some probably do but that's still just their opinion) .People will always have their opinions and preferred cars , personally I wouldn't have a MINI , I hired one for a long weekend and gave it a GOOD test , it didn't do much for me really and for seemed to have missed some key points of trying to revive the mini name , amongst them the price , the original was cheap and cheerful motoring for everyone , not a small luxury car . But that's my opinion , I'm allowed to have it the same as you're allowed to love your MINI , I also prefer round nose mini's to clubmans , that's also my opinion and like others we can voice those opinions here without people getting upset (well , too upset anyway) . Are you expecting MINI owners to be some sort of sacred animal here and not have others voice their opinions if you don't agree with them ?

Poki, no offence was intended, but sometimes people are just a little too touchy.

Why is it every time anyone mentions a negative opinion on the new MINI some MINI owner has to have a whinge about it? The Clubby vs Roundy or Mini vs Moke debate surfaces occasionally, but never generates the same kind of heat.

Reading over my post I can't see how such a reaction was warranted. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I simply expressed mine. I'm not forcing you or anyone else to agree with me.

Peace?

Regards,

Which reminds me of a question I asked on here a while back, but I don't think we really answered. Is it just me, or do most clubby owners look like they've been hit with the same ugly stick as their cars? :?

:P

ok Betty, you're the exception.

Sports850 Not at all. Your opinion has been expressed in a gentleman like manner and that is all that I am asking.

The way that some have chosen to express their opinion can be compared to the really annoying and loud drunk who endlessly repeats himself because no one is game to tell him to shut it. Admittedly, perhaps the post I responded to was not that bad when taken on its own but it was similar to sitting around having a quiet conversation and having a loud drunken bore decide he wanted to tell us all that he doesn't like the shirt that one of us is wearing. It is rude and unneccessary and I will challenge it every time I think I see it when BINIs are being spoken of.

Yeah you are right, I was a bit touchy and am probably a bit too idealistic for my own good. Sorry to have singled you out but it wasn't what you had to say that annoyed me, it was how it was said. As I am way past the dog with a bone stage, I am more than happy to drop it and try this peace thing though.

True , but the really loud drunk is often best ignored and everyone realises what they are and soon they're ignored sitting in the corner because they didn't get the reaction they wanted , but you can't talk sense into every one of them . It's like the old saying "don't argue with an idiot , other people mightn't realise which ones the idiot" .....

Sorry if I sounded like I was singling you out by the way .
