That is right! You only get one chance.
BMC used to recommend that ....

All fluid seals in the hydraulic system and all flexible hoses should be examined and renewed if necessary every 3 years or 40,000 miles (65,000km) whichever is sooner. At the same time the working surface of the pistons and of the bores of the master cylinder, wheel cylinders, and other slave cylinders be examined and new parts fitted where necessary.

8)

I've never done it with the frame in the car...i would say you have to undo the four top tower nuts to drop it a bit..

After removing the four top subframe bolts, and loosening the front (if necesary) shove large screw driver or the like between suspension tower tops things and body and shift the whole thaing down, with about 2 inch of clearance if should wiggle out nicely, well it did for me at least!

okay. mini-mad a special thanks to you for your replies when we had the laptop downstairs, the timing of it all worked out well! :D

so far, the brakes are pretty much done except for a small problem we ran into with the adapter fitting above the d/s flex hose, now we are moving onto the steering (all that is left is a good bleeding of the system and I think we'll be right). so far the four U-bolts that secure the steering rack to the firewall have been dismantled, the tie rod ends obviously unbolted and (after a bit of frustrating fiddling) the pinion gear was dropped down and out of the steering column enough to free up the rack to be able to be moved in mostly a horizontal direction, but there is say 1cm of vertical "wiggle", i guess is all you could describe it as.

obviously now the problem is that the rack won't fit when I try to pull it through towards either the passenger's side or the driver's side. After loosening the four nuts that secure what seems to be the frame to the body from underneath, I still found that there was no movement in the whole structure and no more clearance could be achieved.

can anyone explain a bit more to me where the top sub-frame bolts are? furthermore, can anyone explain to me the general securing points of the frame to the body?? I must admit, staring at the frame its really not all that obvious how it is bolted to the body. If anyone has a schematic diagram of the construction of the mini onto its frame, i would really appreciate if you could post it up because at the moment I'm a bit lost. As i say, i've undone the bottom 4 nuts, but I can't for the life of me figure out where any other securing points are... but then again, i'm used to looking at vast expanses of chrysler engine bays, nothing like these mini's!! :D

any help much appreciated.

cheers!

No problem 8)

For the mounting location, pop the bonnet and look at the crossbeam on the firewall..

On each side there will be two 1/2" nuts holding studs which protrude from the frame up through the crossmember..

There are then an additional two at the front of the car near the front bumper..

Someone may chime in with a diagram, there's one out there somewhere..

can someone please tell me where the securing points of the frame are? the only ones i can see are:

1. 4 securing nuts at the back of the frame, underneath the cabin floor (got these removed)

2. securing nuts at the front, near the bumper bar (got these removed)

Image

3. tower fasteners. where are they? i have included some photos of the general area, maybe someone can point them out for me  the only fasteners visible at this stage around the tower area are the two bolts shown with the blue arrows below... I find it very hard to believe that these bolts are frame securing points, but I guess its only a small car...?

obviously i have to move the jack stands elsewhere, but any help to get these towers detached enough from the body to lower everything down enough to get the rack out would be great.

thanks again guys

NO, there are 2 nuts or bolts (vertical) behind that triangular gusset, and the same on the other side.
