Sorry, just had to add my two cents worth.

<geek mode>
Ping does refer to sonar usage and since the TCP/IP stack was 'created' or more correctly said, flogged, by the US military it refers the 'sounding' of an end point be it a sub, ship or network element.
</geek mode>

:D

The term `ping' comes from sonar useage, I think- subs would send sonar signal and a `ping' received meant some bastard was there.. probably an enemy. :shock:

most of the time the sonar is passive i.e. it just listens. if you 'ping' you send out a sound pulse to determine the range of something by counting the time it takes for the echo to return. but it also then means everyone knows where you are. if you hear a ping, it's crap your dacks time, because it means someone else is getting a range on you, presumably to attack :shock: don't you guys read your tom clancy????

i refuse to acknowledge the geekiness of the previous paragraph. :roll:

mickmini, that you are correct, but it was assumed that - as you have pointed out - that ping requests receive a 'echo' reponse both in active sonar and TCP/IP internetworking.

The ping is heard by the poor barsted/network element who just got sounded, but as a 'echo' to the sender calculating either distance or latency.

Since the forum topic was 'ping' then it can be assumed that the 'echo' would be heard from, well, yourself. ;)

Just defending my right to geekiness. :D
