99% of 850s were made here, hardly any were imported whole. Yes, the early cars were built from UK CKD kits, but tooling was progressively put in here for major pressings. My 1st car (1961) had UK tube frame seats with the brackets welded onto the X-member, but it already had the 4 tapped holes in front for the Oz seats.
The UK seats were crap,- so I fitted later ones...

I had a few mates back then who worked in the Zetland factory.... 8)

My 850 has slots in the roof gutters, brackets welded to the cross member where the seats are, and the two piece snap on headlining. Where the front panels are, there is no seam line (Is this normal?) It is a 1962, and on the plate it says that its original colour was Inca yellow. Can you tell by the original colour where it came from? e.g. Did they only produce certain colours in certain places? Does anybody have a chart or link to such a website?
Thnaks, steve.

If no front seam line it is filled with bog, probably. Sounds an early car- what is the car body prefix number? YMA2S1, or different? Could be UK car..
I thought Inca Yellow was a UK colour...??

It is Yma S21. I htink you may be right that some one has filled over it, I just sanded it back and the seam is there! The other side is fine (I probably should have noticed that  ! Are English ones worth anymore, or are they all about the same?

Mines about to be resprayed, other than that it just needs a new set of rings! Anyone know the cheapest place in adelaide to pick up a set of rings for a standard sized 998?

i think imported ones are much rarer than those built here
and thus worth a few quid more
people who get their hands on imported ones usually keep their hands on them
rings shouldnt be much at all, its the labour that you'd be scared of
if you do the rings, it is recommended that other parts are going to have to be looked at, and replaced, adding onto the costs

you know how the engine and gearbox are one, you'd never hear the end of it
but its good to do things properly

I was well into Minis way back then, and AFAIK, NO 850 imports were sold here, any UK 850s here would have been imported privately since.
And I've never seen one. UK Cooper S's, yes..

I would rate any recent `early UK Mini' import less than an Oz one- it's most likely to be full of rust from all the road salt etc..

No rust at all! It has been in some guys shed for nearly ten years, and of the road for four. Body is perfectly straight, just needs new door hinges which I finally found.

It might? have a UK roof, but if it's YMA2S1 it's an Oz built car.

Doc ...give the guy a break....it might have been professionally lead wiped!! (not bloody likely though! )

Quite a number of english cars, Travellers and Countrymen (plus Coopers as Doc said) were privately imported into Australia by individuals.

Maybe an Aussie compliance plate has been grafted to a pommie body?? Maybe someone cut the roof off an English and whacked it on an Aussie?
The possibilities are endless!! :!:

Try British Motor Heritage. Will cost some dosh, but they will even be able to tell you who the first owner was, if it is a private import! It may have even been bought into NZ and then imported from here :D
