On the subject of mufflers, i was thinking of bringing a stainless Playmini one back with me, but i've also looked at maniflow and the old RC40. Anyone have any personal preference or experiences with these? :)

My muffler rule- don't buy anything you can't either see or poke a broomhandle through.
There are still a lot of crap design mufflers out there.

I've run an RC40 for 12 years, took it off to fit a 2" system, it's still good.

That was the problem with my old muffler (besides the noise  ), it had a baffle running across the muffler completely blocking the exhaust. When it got pulled off and we looked inside it, the guy told me I would get more power using the new one. Now I'm running a stock 998 with 22Hp ATW so I was very sceptical, but it has made a noticable difference. Last night going up Parramatta road it felt like it had more torque down low.

Chop; There are plenty of good aftermarket mufflers in Oz, I'd probably only get one in the UK if you were going for originality. 8)

For example, K series Ford Lasers have a nice flexible section at the bottom of their headers....other cars in wreckers might have flex sections that would work quite well in a Mini

my old exhaust was past its use by date so replaced it with a new system, with a resonator up front then a large muffler at the back to try and quieten it down.
the muffler is baffled but believe it is from a v8 of some sort, so should flow fine for my 1098- mildly worked... well i didn't seem to notice a loss in power
never been dynoed so couldn't say 4 sure :?
does this sound ok or should i have stuck with a straight thru- is there one out there that will keep the noise down? rc40 maybe- i know a lot of minis have got these but why..

Supposedly the RC40 was designed by David Vizard. It proved on his dyno to actually give better power than a plain pipe and no muffler.

Looking inside one, yes they are straight through, but also the front end has a cavity `expansion chamber'? with no glass in it.

They are 17" long and fit in nicely as a side exit. It's hard to find another muffler the same oval size and length these days, here anyway.
