Thanks guys for the offers - car is Sydney based, I'm in Tassie!
Might take somebody up on an offer to view, but will also travel up myself once I have received all the info I need and am 99% happy. This might even be as early as tomorrow, or at latest next weekend.
The responses to my original post have been awesome and soooo quick. Once I buy what I want I'll be sure to stick around here - it seems like a nice place to be! 8)

Folks - have just received the following info:
Body number YG2S4xxxx
Eng number 9FXEYxxxxx
I think this confirms it to be a MkII, and the numbers are early in the sequence - well, confirmed enough for me anyway  I think I have found my new toy!! :D :D

Thanks for all the interest and tips - this is a great site.

Peter.

Body and Engine prefix say that it is a genuine MK2 Australian built Cooper S. 1275 engine.

Go to http://www.ozcooper.com.au/new_page_3.htm

Sounds like you did get a nice find. Personally I'm more of a MK1 kind of guy, but I knwo the MKII's are highly sort after. being much rarer and all.

For a 69 car, you need a good clear photo of the radiator shroud panel, this may be the only true identifier.......

Hi

What should be looked for on a '69 car. If no plate then look at radiator shroud? What should be looked for, a particular number series? I'm looking at one tomorrow and would like to be armed with enough info to make a correct assessment.

Cheers
Steve

This is all good info, http://www.ozcooper.com.au/new_page_3.htm
plus the build dates :
http://www.ozcooper.com.au/build_dates.htm

But Buyer beware, 69 MkII's are the easiest to fake and the most common! coincidence!

Mk II S 2419 made, only 4500 still out there!!

I bought a 70 because of the plate!

Steve- there are many people far more qualified than me that will have answers for you, but in my recent search for info to help me find a car, I have learnt that some '69 MkII S's did not have a compliance plate and you find the Body number on the shroud between the inner guard and the radiator. It should begin with YG2S4.....
The engine number should begin with 9FXEY.....
This info was given by very helpful members of this forum, and can also be found here
http://www.ozcooper.com.au/new_page_3.htm
along with lots of other tips to help identify the car.
Good luck!!
Peter.
