Did you ever go and check out Silverdale Doc? I used to love the drive thru the countryside and the neat little pub when you got thirsty

Memories are good to have sometime.....now....where have I left mine!![/quote]

Silverdale.. one hill I never got a run at. I was in HDCC back then. I ran up Amaroo, Lithgow (40 bends), and Robertson. Also used to do the dirt circuit and main circuit at Amaroo, and the original (sth) circuit at Oran Pk.
My weapon of choice back then (`69 on) was a Fiat 124AC coupe. I ran the old Mini once up Amaroo in 1968, got a 29 I think.

My best time up Amaroo (1970) was 26.1, in a borrowed Formula Vee. Good enough for 3rd FTD. Colin Bond was 2nd in the old Lynx Peugeot, 1st was some dude in a Bowin Holden. 8)

<edit> The first hillclimb I ever attended (I was a kid of 14) was run by HDCC at Wadd's Nursery, West Pennant Hills, in late 50s. Near where IBM is now.
It was all dirt. FTD was a friend's WW2 Willys Jeep, running in FWD only (they wouldn't let him run 4WD. But he still won!

Gee you're older than me! Now talk about 40 bends and this is a true story. We stayed at the Mt Vic pub on Saturday night for the run up the hill on Sunday and the local copper fronts up and we get to talking about hill climbs which he liked the sound of. After we all got a big skinful (he is on duty) we decide to go up to the hill and have a run. I went in the patrol car and my mates took their cars and we arrived to find that at night the hill climb is the local lovers lane. The copper fixed that by driving up with lights and siren on and they all took off. So we started to run up and down, nearly totalled the cops car once or twice and called it a night. The next morning he fronts up at the hill to have a look and said have a look at the tyres on the patrol car. They were stuffed, but the funniest thing was all the writing on the side walls was scrubbed off. I don't know how he explained it.

So you are related the rallying Guests of today??

Great reminiscences "guest"...why not choose a funny handle and drop in from time to time with a few more stories....

Bob Holden.....hmmmm wonder if you can confirm the story about Col and Bob's super tuned engine swapped out at Bathurst that year where they embarrassed the international tuners and got to drive their tuned version.

Sorry about that I thought I was logged in. As to the Holden/Bond story, no I can't recall it. I am sure Bondy would if you asked him. a very approachable bloke or used to be.

Welcome Chris, I assume you were the guest and have now signed up!!

There is this story......

about Bob Holden and maybe Col Ogilvie??.....

anway...the story goes that they, being excellent Mini tuners (standard Cooper S we are talking about here hmmmm (aint Yoda a great little guy!) that they came up with the "gun" engine for Bathurst in 1966.

Now this is where I get bit fuzzy....

I think they were forced to swap-out the engine into another Mini by the international Mini folk or their tuners. But when they did so, they removed their demon tweaks.

The next day they tootled around with a detuned engine so as not to
attract attention. The internationals could not work out how Holden had cut the previously fast times.

Come race day, the tweaks were put back in and the rest is history...their car ran away and hid. The works tuners may never have found out what the demon tweaks were.

Could be just an urban myth, pure bullcrap or has a basis in truth...wouldn't it be nice to have Bob himself log on and tell us some of his stories 8)

Brisbane racing enthusiest, Fred Sayers has some very interesting info on the Broadspeeds. He even still has a couple of the moulds.
Apparently some guy that he know had a heap of Moulds but this bloke went and offed himself and Fred has been unable to locate the missing moulds.

Scatter Cams??? Fred has written evidence (some old cam profiles) that they were around in 60's. Definately not something new that Vizard invented.

re scatter cams.. there was a rumour the Bathurst works cars had them in `66, would not have been necessarily picked up in scrutineering as they `always' check the profiles on #1 cylinder.
Fact or fiction- I dunno.
Another rumour was that these works motors were `motored' on the dyno with warm oil and water for 20 hours or so, (not started) just to lap them in. Maybe another urban myth....??

Yep! but also bear in mind that this was the era of "running in" a production race car by driving it to the tracks!! (eg Fuds from Broadmeadows to Bathurst!) I am fairly sure the 1966 Minis were taken away from the track after practice days etc to be worked on

The winners were impounded immediately for scrutineering of the whole car after the race. There were quite a few cars disqualified from results at this point.

I have seen film of the BMC cars arriving at the track on the back of a truck so we can guess that they were run in before they arrived.

I have read about race tems in the 50s and 60s that used to run in engines on the dyno by motoring them with a slave engine (BRM used to do this to their F1 engines) So if BMC was clever they could have done this.

There was one team who had to fit a new motor (I can't remember what car) and time to run it in was not available so they used talcum powder down the carby to increase the clearances. I can't remember the outcome but it was talked about quite a lot at the time. Most, if not all the cars were run in on the road. I recall Bill Tuckey talking of running in a Monaro up the north coast and having a big lose while overtaking a semi in the wet.

& often, some of the True ones are even forgotten by the people who actually did them

i`m not too old to have forgotten "too" much stuff (like my dad) but i`m also old enough to Know what`s real & whats rubbish,,,,& yeah, there`s lots & lots more rubbish stories than there are true ones

& that`s the truth :-)

Yeeeeeessss, with you so far....but be careful because I'm probably from the same generation as your Dad!!! and whilst I have trouble remembering my own name sometimes there are vivid memories of what I actually saw in the 1960s/70s....

You are right about people who actually did it not remembering...seen a couple of examples of just that :?

I saw the Broadspeed race at Oran Park and at Catalina...that I do remember...Laurie Stewart springs to mind on both occaisions....however

I seem to recall Brian also had a go.....but who cares really?? Both these guys are Mini Heros as far as I'm concerned....lets leave it at that.

BTW does anyone know if Laurie Stewart is still around??

They were good days Gaf, I will have to try and come up with some more reminiscences (if I can get my damn reminiscer to kick over  ).

As for open roads....yep we did have "derestricted" signs which meant you could row it along fairly well so long as you could prove that you were "in control" of the car.

Trouble was....so many of the roads were little more than goat tracks....challenging goat tracks mind

I recall going to Brisbane from Sydney for hols as a lad when people tended to travel in "convoys" to look after one another and you had to use about 5-7? punts to cross the rivers!!

Then there was the time, many years later, I did two consecutive 360s on a "Cane Toad river" crossing the road up near the Sugar Refinery...the Mini stunk to high heaven by the time I got to Brisbane!!

Nite!
