Is it just the light on one of them that makes it look inverted?

well look at your 2nd pic, there are shadows in the corners of many of the numbers on that pic only (1, for example).

They look allright to me. :? Both my plates are reverse stamped and they were both on the bed of the scanner at the same time. (There is a slight difference in the finish of the aluminum though)

My old Mini K (Pops) was a 12/70 (if I recall correctly) and it was a large plate.

Maybe with the new ADR's introduced in 1971 (month?) that included lift up door handles was the cut-over to the small compliance plate?

Interesting question though!

Just for the mix, here is a very early GT plate....

My 12/70 K has the Clubby lift up door handles.

They changed to the smaller plate around November -December 1970 , there is no actual exact date though when this actually occured . They also changed the date stamping to reverse type around the same time . However they must have had a few of the larger plates left over which they wanted to use up , as ive seen both types for November-December 1970 cars . Also seen the larger plates with both types of date stamping , ie : reverse and front stamping , again November- December 1970

Just to clarify, when the Mk2 cars were first produced, at what number did the compliance plates start? did they reset to 1000 and then climb up from there (ie body number 500) or was there another number?

I've had a question posed about my machine, and wouldn't mind being certain.

cheers

Mick

And just to add to that question from Mick, and while we're on the subject - when did they stop placing compliance plates on cars (was it at the start of the MkIIs?) and when did they start them again? And why?
Again, just for interest sake in anybody knows.
Cheers
Peter. :)

They stopped putting body ID plates on them around March 1969, and the VIN plates didn't come in until approx Dec 1969.
From then on, all had a VIN plate.

Not sure of number of first Mk2 to get a compliance plate , but it was in December 1969 sometime and going on average of just over 100 Cooper S produced per month it would have to be around car number 1200 ie body number 700 . The numbers didn't change they started at YG2S4 501 for the first Mk2 through to YG2S4 2919 , the last one produced .....cheers

Yeah, I've been looking at http://www.ozcooper.com.au/build_dates.htm which helps, but I'm pretty sure this data varies.

In one of my books I have June 69 as the begining of the end of the ID plates. In another book I have Jan 70 as the date that all cars would have had Compliance plates. They way it is written it would have been flexible.

They are not "VIN" plates, they are "Compliance" plates. There is a big difference. A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is an international numbering system. No Australian built Mini has a VIN.

We need to call the plates by their correct names to avoid future confusion. :D
