With cars like these, where over 5 million were produced, parts can easily get sold off or given a quick repaint, and just dissapear in the crowd......
It is just as easy to buy a numerical stamp set and stamp your drivers license number or tax file number onto your main parts (back of the wheels, under the rocker cover, seat bracket, boot floor) and photograph it when you do it. If the car ever gets stolen and you find a part with your number on it, just pull out the photo and call the police......
Satellite tracking is wonderful..... but some concourse car owners would never fit it due to it not being a period accessory.... and others just couldnt afford it.
You are assuming the car is recovered in the juristiction it was stolen in. A lot of these cars are not dismantled, just shipped to the customer who ordered it. Stamps are not a valid form of protection, I can remove any stamped number you put on a car. You are also relying on finding a part which came from your car, a very long shot.
Satellite tracking is not for everyone if they can afford the loss. If the car is used on the road then it is a viable method of protection, losing a classic car by theft virtually gaurantees you won't drive it again if professionals are involved as would appear in the case of the original poster. If it were to be recovered as a dismantled or changed wreck as was witnessed on this forum a few years ago (Melbourne, remember?) it is a heart breaking experience. As for not being able to afford it that's up to your judgement as the owner, insurance always costs no matter what form it comes in. I feel a bit uneasy about debating this stuff here as I obviously have a vested interest so bear that in mind when reading my comments.
