No brand names here as I don't want to get booted for advertising. I am a dealer for GPS tracking, it doesn't matter which one you use, but if one is fitted the car can be tracked even if the power is disconnected. My advice is for a car which can't be replaced, get one fitted knowing you have a better than even chance of getting the car back and in a lot of cases finding other cars which have been stolen as the car is usually taken to where they have others. I wouldn't bother fitting one to a Huyuandi for instance but if it is a cherished car get one. You should also be able to negotiate cheaper insurance as well. Sorry if this is construed as advertising, I only mean to point out an anti theft device which doesn't occur to a lot of people.

:( thats terrible news.

May I suggest that you make up some fliers and send them to as many mini and classic car shops around Australia as you can.

A car like yours doesnt blend in, people will notice it if they see it!

Best of luck,

Matt

Chris , can you give us a run down of what the systems are and ballpark figures of their cost etc here . Names etc are alright so long as you don't keep reposting the info etc every second post you make .

There was a story in the news about a month back about a robbery in America. Some thieves broke into the store of a local council and among other things stole 9 Sat Nav units waiting to be fitted to council vehicles. After speaking with the manufacturers the Police were able to turn the units on remotely and tracked them down 3 days later. Even busted one of the thieves with one in his hands trying to figure out how it worked

Most earthmoving equipment has them fitted now as most brands have common keys to help truck drivers load them etc , good for servicing/transporting but a pain for security . I'd wondered if they could be used on cars without being obvious , could well be a worthwhile investment and maybe even worth a bulk buy ....

I supply this one.....http://www.ezitrak.com.au/

A quick rundown might be best. Most of them require you to have ongoing tracking costs which is not necessary. Tracking is only needed if the car disappears as a rule. ET works soley on the cell phone network by text or SMS and all commands are put into it this way. You have two choices get a low monthly plan or a phone card if you wish and I suppose the downside of the phone card is that you must remember to renew it. if you have the bad luck to have an intrusion into the car the unit dials your phone and tells you what is happening via text message, you then disable the car by sending a command to the unit. It will tell what the car is doing, where it is and then you have the choice of alerting the police etc and at this time you can stop the car if you wish. The car can also be tracked by map on the internet if you have that access at the time. If you require assistance during a theft ET have a help desk to assist as necessary. It really is a totally self contained system that once bought requires no additional ongoing fees from youself bar the SIM card to drive it. The price for a basic kit is $975 + fitting which is in the region of $250-$350 depending on complexity and the level of kit fitted. For those who wish it can have a panic button fitted and that can ring out to a different phone number if the person wearing the emergency button is who normally monitors the car. It is no good ringing yourself in an emergency in which you are getting attacked! The whole system is Australian manufactured to the highest standard with a full parts back up. We can do quantity discounts if needed, also available for bikes boats and trailers. Ask any questions you like I am only to glad to be of help.

With cars like these, where over 5 million were produced, parts can easily get sold off or given a quick repaint, and just dissapear in the crowd......

It is just as easy to buy a numerical stamp set and stamp your drivers license number or tax file number onto your main parts (back of the wheels, under the rocker cover, seat bracket, boot floor) and photograph it when you do it. If the car ever gets stolen and you find a part with your number on it, just pull out the photo and call the police......

Satellite tracking is wonderful..... but some concourse car owners would never fit it due to it not being a period accessory.... and others just couldnt afford it.

You are assuming the car is recovered in the juristiction it was stolen in. A lot of these cars are not dismantled, just shipped to the customer who ordered it. Stamps are not a valid form of protection, I can remove any stamped number you put on a car. You are also relying on finding a part which came from your car, a very long shot.
Satellite tracking is not for everyone if they can afford the loss. If the car is used on the road then it is a viable method of protection, losing a classic car by theft virtually gaurantees you won't drive it again if professionals are involved as would appear in the case of the original poster. If it were to be recovered as a dismantled or changed wreck as was witnessed on this forum a few years ago (Melbourne, remember?) it is a heart breaking experience. As for not being able to afford it that's up to your judgement as the owner, insurance always costs no matter what form it comes in. I feel a bit uneasy about debating this stuff here as I obviously have a vested interest so bear that in mind when reading my comments.

There's no debate here...... i'm all for it too.

I remember reading a story about a Merc owner who called his Sattelite Tracking agent after it was stolen, to find out it was travelling at over 400kmh and was somwhere high over the ocean. Stolen, then on a plane and out of the country in a matter of hours. Truth? No idea....
