Chong, with all that plastic that speakers are made from and the tiny magnets used, it wouldn't have made any difference, besides, would it gain you that much? Being your all about power to weight, why don't you run it down the qtr mile, i'd be interested to see it go up against enki's automatic

Cheers

I dunno what crappy speakers you have seen but the ones I had mounted to the board under the rear passenger weighed at LEAST 10 kilos. I still have them and they weight a ton. I think it was the wood that it was mounted to was thick and heavy as the speakers were so heavy. I'll bring them on Dyno Day if you don't believe me, someone can have them!!!

I'm with you Chong I just weighed my speakers and board (from under rear seat) I thought it would of been 10kg but it only weighed in at 6kg so it can stay in my daily but the go fast mini will have none of this trash 8)

Oh and the sound is crapola under the rear seat and they are half decent JVC 6x9's my old mini had 6x9's in the parcel shel and the sound was so much better and had heaps more bass

Chris, don't you have splits?

The sound will be the same, if not better than on the parcel shelf with the tweeters on the dash. 8)

As a thought , if you wanted to keep it all mostly hidden , can you get speakers to fit in a board on top of the bins either side of the rear seat , sealing the bin (probably have to line it with something as well) as a speaker box then cover it with fabric so it looks like an arm rest ? Maybe put the board on the angle to give more room to fit them and also angle the sound towards the middle of the car ?

If you wish to get really technical there computer programs (free) that will give you the frequency response for a given enclosure /speaker/vented /unvented combination

Car speakers are made so that they use the car as part of the enclosure.
If useing speakers under the seat (or maybe even the side pockets in the back) then HiFi type speakers may perform better not auto type, as the enclosure space is fairly rigid and won't add to the vibrations so a speaker designed to perform at its best in a speaker box environment may be better.

May run some simulations and see what I come up with

I just use my IPOD, only 50grams, sounds just as good, and just as loud as any system you can build :P

AND you can continue listenning out of the car!

The reason it sounds muffled under the seat is two fold.
1. You have it enclosed, dropping the effective range
2. Its way under your head, and not directional, so you hear the high frequencies less.

Thats why Splits work better in this setup. Tweeters at head level, cones (woofers - not fully sick subs) under neath... bass is not directional.

If you have them properly mounted in the parcel shelf you will get good sound, but still wont gain the best out of them.

3 or 4 way speakers are good, decent but not for a complete audio setup as you cant tune each one seperately... (ie, the tweeter, mid and woofer)

My bass producing speakers will be down low, mids in the pockets or doors/dash and tweeters at parcel shelf/dash level. 6x9's (3 or 4 way, in the parcel shelf for fill only really.

Each needs to be driven by an amp (built in or not) and setup differently... low pass, mid pass, high pass, etc.

Chris, im happy to chat with you about setups if you want. You can spend alot to get a crappy sound, or you can spend less and get a great sound...

Pep

IMO speakers mounted under the rear seat will never sound good. Too low and too muffled for a decent sound. Even mid range will be severely reduced.

Next best would be in the rear map pockets with some sound insulation. After that would be the parcel shelf for the best sound from the rear.

Seeing you have splits, why waste them by putting them in the rear in the first place? The best spot is in the front. Which way do your ears point.. Woofers in a pod on the kick panel, or in the door if u want (though less damage on kick panel as u only need a couple of bolt holes). Then the tweeter between the top and bottom dash rail, depending on model.
That is assuming u don't have front speakers already...

I have my woofers under the rear seat. I tried it as a test to see how it would sound, and it's stayed like that.

Indeed the best setup is to have the woofer in front of you, but for fact that it is so easy to put the woofers under the rear seat, and for the fact that it is zero impact on the car (I mean, not cutting, drilling, etc), I recomend putting the woofers under the rear seat.

Also, there would be ALOT of work mounting a speaker in the door of a Mini. You need to have it mounted so it will not vibrate causing the speaker to create sounds it isn't suppose to.

Agree with the minimal impact poeee. I wouldn't touch the doors myself either. Though with dynamat any vibrations can be eliminated, but i don't think this is an SPL install is it :P .
As for the no drilling, how do u hold the under seat panel in? Is it just a tight fit yeah? My pods only use 2 bolts through the kick, so they are fairly low impact. But my car is'nt original so i didn't mind putting some holes in...

Chong, if your serious about getting rid of your speakers and board, i would actually be keen to grab em. Will catch you on MSN and chat about it. an extra 10kgs in my van with me sitting in it, won't make any difference,

Cheers

the boot acts as one HUGE speaker box, and your sound will be quite good IMHO, but I am no ICE expert

Correct the boot does act like a box as it creates vacuum and creates reverb and kinda amplifies the bass frequencies.
