I was driving last night and afternoon in puddles that almost went over the bonet and I have previous been in weather where the rain actually did at times make puddles that consumed my bonet entirely never missed a beat and soldiers on every time in the wet. However she does slide a little when I keep the revs up so I try to keep them downa as much as possible.

Never a problem with a pulsar dizzy, and you really shouldn't actually.

As for the Lucas dizzys the Mk2 large bodied dizzys seem to be fantastic at keeping water out as well as always being able to get caps from auto shops due to it's use on a number of english manufactured later cars.

Never-ever a problem in the rain (Darwin wet season as well as the Perth winter cold fronts) with the one I had on the S. The S dizzys being different only by the absence of vacuum advance.

Fixed.............I think. Yesterday (tuesday) the car was parked infront of my house, facing downhill with all the ignition components dry. When the car wouldnt start after the rain it became obvious that its not the splash of water but rather moisture that affects it.

So the ignition leads - which I already suspected were done for - came out and replaced by an old set of topguns which were in my car when I bough it (the old topgun leads still had less than a quarter the resistance of the leads in my car). Bingo - the car started and ran fine. So new leads it is. The top gun set though was obviously adapted from another car, as the leads are way too long for the mini. I've already got a set of GR leads ordered and they'll go in on Thursday. Plus I'll still relocate the coil to the inner wheel arch, just to be on the safe side.

BTW while in there I took the dizzy cap off and its due for a swap too so a new cap and rotor will go in on thursday. the interior of the distributor and under the cap was covered in thin brown residue - is this something to be concerned about?

OH and I doubt there was ever a gasket fitted to the Pulsar distributor cap - there's no part number listing for it anywhere and the cap doesnt seem to have a provision for a seal .

Mike,
That gasket fits onto the dizzy body, not the cap. it is a flat shape and has 2 oval lumps that locate in the body. They all did have it.
If Pulsar dizzy has never been stripped since bought I would do it, the red dust may be from the advance mechanism weights and pins running dry. Lucas do it too.
Regrease it and the shaft with HTB grease on assembly.
