9YEUH was 998cc capacity from the factory.
40 thou oversize would give you capacity of 1030cc (1029.64 to be precise).
So to answer your question, about 70 cc short.
If the motor is in good nick, I would not be too worried. In fact you may have a better engine as I think the 998 with its shorter stroke revs more freely than the longer stoke 1098 which i also think has a crankshaft which is a bit sus at high revs (something to do with piston speeds etc & beyond my comprehension, so I will leave that to the gurus on this forum).

To answer the question, Yes it can be 1100 with a 998 engine number... it might be like mine and rebuilt with 1100 crank instead of 998 crank.

Call the cops and call the RTA in your state and start talking.
If anyone can tell you its them.

I would START with RTA... if they say its all ok and you can register it, then thats cool.
If not, go to the cops if its stolen.

If its not stolen and it is fine, just make sure you get it in your hands... once you have it, if its wrong, issues, mis-represented then contact ebay... and dispute it.

Wait, is your Dad picking it up and paying cash? If so, dont pay unless its all legit!!! If you have already paid, then do the ebay dispute thing.

Pete.

I'm a bit mechanically-retarded though - how can a 998 become a 1100 with a different crank? Explain in small words please

I'm making the necessary phone calls now to check out if it's legit or not. Paying cash on pick-up so there's still time to back out if needed.

And I'm assuming everything will bolt straight back onto a 998 if it originally came from an 1100??

Basically the capacity is the bore (diameter of the piston) X the stroke (travel up and down of the piston) , a 998 and 1098 (1100) have the same bore (the pistons are the same diameter) but the 1098 is a longer stroke (the crankshaft lets the piston go further down and further up) which gives it the extra 100cc capacity . If a 998 motor is fitted with a 1098 crankshaft and pistons it will be identical to a 1098 motor .

The other matter is however if it is a 998 the seller has incorrectly advertised it as a 1098 so if you really wanted a 1098 then you have grounds to not buy it as it is the wrong motor . If you are just after a standard motor then a 998 won't be much difference to a 1098 really .

Thankyou, that makes perfect sense!

Yeah I kinda got a bit shirty when I found out it was a 998 from the engine number, but really, I want something that will go reliably and won't cost me the earth. If the extra 100ccs (or 70cc with the re-bore) don't make that big of a difference then I'm not too worried...

So are there any inherant problems putting a 1100 crank on a 998?

According to the mini car clinic catalogue it's a morris mini minor (YMA2S3) engine number when they changed from 850 to 998 .

I asked him to check and make sure of the letters.

I mucked it up before, the number he gave me was 9YEUI****, not 9YEUH.

The 9YEUH came off a Morris Mini c1964 from what I can gather... Can't find anything on a 9YEUI...

Thanx Ian.

To the original poster....be carefull. An engine designated from a 'pre pollution' vehicle is not registerable in a later model Mini. The RTA will do a search on the engine number and tell you that your car is eg: 1976, and the motor is eg: 1965.

I know the RTA were always VERY strict on this sort of thing, but lately I have seen people register late Minis with early engine numbers....so who really knows.

Just be aware of this.

I don't know the 9YEUI prefix but the H in the morris mini minor prefix stands for high compression (not enough to get excited though , high compression compared to a low compression motor ...) , not sure about the I but Morris1100 can most likely shed further light on that when he's on later .

As for putting an 1100 crank into a 998 I haven't done it myselkf but my understanding is the 998 and 1100 blocks are identical and it's only the crankshaft and pistons that are different so if this motor has been converted to 1100 and the crank and pistons are both 1100 items then it's fine . I'm sure someone else can confirm this later too .

Just been having a think , I wonder if it's 9YEUL , not 9YEUI , meaning a low compression version of the morris mini minor motor for whatever reason ? It won't make any difference to this motor as the pistons were dished more to make a low compression motor and since this one is 40 though over it hasn't got the original low compression pistons anyway .

okey dokey - called the RTA, they say there is no problem sticking a 1960-something motor into a 1975 body - as long as the engine size is no more than 15% greater than the original... So no worries there. I just hope they remember that when I go to register it.

QLD police assure me that the engine number (all variants) has not been listed as stolen anywhere in Australia. He also advised me never to buy a car off ebay and gave the helpful hint that the S-class mercedes that is advertised on ebay for $3000 is not legit (damn!)

Hey Mate,

That sounds good!
To answer your other question, having an 1100 crank in a 998 wont give you any more problems than a standard 998 or a standard 1100.

In my 998 I put an 1100 crank and oversize (+40 thou) pistons so my capacity is 1132... mine is EXTREMELY worked and the only issue I have is keeping under the speed limit :D

Good luck with your motor and build mate.

Tell me about your old 998, whats wrong with it?

Pete.

Be careful with earlier motors, I totally rebuilt a 1974 1098 and the local bluslip derros (no names here, PM me if ya want) in Seven Hills refused to update rego for our 1978 Clubby S with it. There is something in the rules that can stop you fitting an older motor into a newer car.
So I told em to get stuffed, kept on driving... car is sold now anyway.
There are some inspectors that are far more lenient, find one.

I have two blocks and 1100 cranks and one head which came with the car. The head's all been redone, but the bottom end 'needed a bit of work' which is where the guy I bought it off got fed up and decided to sell. On a couple of quotes, this ended up being a rebore, new pistons/rings etc, grind crank and all new bearings and whatever else you can think of. Prices came in at $1600-$2000 for the work, which is way more than I want to spend if I can get away with it!

Now considering if I should offload all that stuff or keep for spares...

Thanks for the heads-up drmini, I am a fair way off getting the bluey done, but will be calling for help with finding a *ahem* shall we say, more sympathetic, inspector when the time comes!!
