Speed limit for towing a trailer is 80kph I thought. Hate to see one of those doing 140kph  even if it was theoretically possible.

Can they legally make vechicle trailers out of alloy or not? If not are there any other lighter metals that they can use besides steel?

I am talking from a trailer manufactures perspective.

Early attempts at aluminium boat trailers suffered badly from fatigue cracking (as did many of the early boats) so they got a bad reputation & people gave up on them. Only recently have I seen good quality aluminium trailers manufactured & sold along with good quality boats.

But yeah, cost is the main reason.

Anyone suggest reputable trailer makers in Sydney metro area? I wish to have a custom one made down the track :)

Yeah, I'd like to know where he got that from!

It's the posted speed limit except for some states where the max is 100 (eg: in a 110 zone). Can't remember which states off the top of my head.

I'm sure I've read the 80kph somewhere - I think it was back when I got my L's in NSW 10 years or so ago in the rule book. 80kph was for all drivers with trailers in NSW.

I'm sure it used to be 80km/h in NSW however, a search tonight yielded these:

"A national agreement on the maximum trailer mass and speed limits applying to a trailer towed by any given vehicle came into effect in December 1998". from a website on caravans and campers, however there was no info on what that level was and it quoted there are some variations state to state despite the "agreement".

"There is no specific speed restriction while towing a trailer. However, the posted speed limits must not be exceeded". From the RTA (NSW) publication on towing trailers.

I downloaded a copy of this, the RTA drivers handbook and the Australian Traffic code and there is no reference in either of those to a towing speed limit.

So there you go - just supports the argument for routine driver testing regardless of age, as I first did my license in about 1979, and then my motorcycle license in 1990/91
