There are opinions and then there opinions that may be deemed defamation.
If i was to lose a sale because someone here said that my engine was a rip off... i would be seriously pissed off.
No one here has mentioned that it was my engine and prices, so i am not worried, but i think that people could word their thoughts better.

$1300 for a running 1275 seems cheap...really cheap ?

If it were me, I would have the running 1275 comp. tested.
Have you seen it running ? Does it blow smoke ? Bad noises ? Heat Issues ?
That $1300 could cost you another 1k (Rebuild yourself) to 3k (Pay someone) if it shits itself in a month or two.

Chances are the $3.3k one is from a shop ? If it is then you may have some sort of warranty on it. And if its from the place that people seem to be hinting at, wouldn't it be a hell of a lot newer than some "$1300 runner" you get offered ? Plus with the SPi gear added onto it, expect to pay more.

Chances are you will get what you pay for. Even better if you pay less for something that turns out to be top quality.

I reckon search all the back streets until you find a Morris 1100'S'
hopefully running easily for bugger all money

They still pop up around the place, and not many people want them.

a low km A+ bigblock would be 3300 times better than a very second hand cheapy.

I was not having a go at people for expressing their opinion. I was making a point that every one has one, some may be a little left of field never the less.

Buying a `very second hand cheapy' gives you the option to make it how YOU want, with da good bits, during rebuild. So for example it might give around 120HP at crank....instead of the stock A+ output which is around 1/2 that. 8)

buying a non A+ bigblock for $1300 leaves you $2000.
i dont think that is enough to get 120 at the fly and rebuild the gearbox etc.

Who said anything about buying a crappy for $1300, my last (seized) one bought was $300.
My last full rebuild from a worn 1310, rebored to 1360 cost me $1,300. OK so I did do lots of the work...

i agree with kev and ryan..

and disagree with both...

it depends on the situation and the what you actually want from an engine..

and also, the money you have, the money you're willing to spend and what technical knowlegde/ability all come into play

if you want something to just plonk in a daily, a low mileage a+ is perfect for you..

if you want an cast iron hard-on, get the raw materials, spend the money and build it (or get will to do it :P ) exactly to your specifications

oh...and can we change this topic from BIG BLOCK to Big (or Large) bore blocks?

yea alright but dunger mentioned one for $1300..
which sounds more like what the ones needing rebuild are going for lately.

looking at my bill
for a basic rebuild the cost of labour was $1260
other parts and machining = $1132
pistons and cam worked out to be about $400
total = $2792
and it didnt stop there..

then you probably have to factor in rebuilding the gearbox, which is about $500-600 in parts alone, and with labour would probably end up being about $1200

:?
