I don't know about you guys, but I just used to bounce through second on my way to first on my 3 synchro box.

ie. back from 3rd to second (only enough to feel resistance, not actually engage second) and up to first. All done in a smooth motion. It's pretty easy.

The synchro on second would do the work of matching the gear speeds.

I was taught to do that and tried it, but I picked up heal and toe more easily... :? Couldn't consistently find that sweet spot on 2nd's synchro. :oops: And it wears your 2nd gear synchro more, which is already the hardest working synchro. :? Plus, heal and toe double de-clutch downshifting sounds more impressive to say, and sounds more impressive when you're driving! :lol: 8)

Yeah, heel-and-toe all the way, bouncing through second was just an easy way to deal with a non-synchro first when you didn't want to sound like you were showing off.

busted 3rd gear synchro here...

and i tend to go

2nd/4th - > neutral (without clutch)-> blip -> clutch in -> 3rd -> etc

but if i'm slowing down i generally skip from 4th to 2nd anyway..

I change the gears up and down with declutch and shifter :P

I say find a way your comfortable with might take a few experiments but you'll get there. As for slowing for corners and/or on the straight. I'd rather wack it in neutral and use the brakes as pads (or drum shoes?... not familar with drums) are 10x easier and much cheaper to replace then synchros and clutches and bearings.

I learnt to drive a non syncromesh gearbox driving Studebaker 6X6 trucks in the Army. At the same time I had my Mini 8) So I tranferred my truck driving skills to the Mini and used to easily go from 2nd or even 3rd to 1st with no problem at all. Just clutch > Neutral release > bip the throttle > clutch > 1st sweet as 8)
