I spent $100 replacing the throttle cables on my BMW. I have no problem with the price of Mini parts!

I'd be using genuine or NOS over a 'bike cable' simply coz its gonna be easier to fit as it was made for the job. Mini parts as so cheap.

I use the bike cables after more than a few let downs with "made for the job" cables. Think about the loads a carb butterfly spring will place on a cable, and then the loads from a mountain cyclist grabbing a hand full of brakes. i know which one will be greater, and not by a close margin either. I use a good quality name brand bike cable because i know it's stainless steel, high grade and teflon lined. More usually anyway, if you are breaking cables, it's because you aren't greasing them before you put them on the car. For the 10 dollars for a "proper" cable, I bet it will be short, and that it will fray and rust.

Also it gives you the choice of length, instead of trying to force the cable through an unatural radius around the booster, heater tap, rocker cover and into the receptacle on the carb/s. I cut it to length and re-use the brass end fittings, grease it up and then forget about it for ten years .

A had an important nut fall off my Dellorto linkages, the cable was fine and the pedal still moved normally but it was no longer attached to the butterfly. I drove home off a high idle speed :)

Not a Mini but...

I broke an accelerator cable in a Land Cruiser on the Strezleki Track. The Moomba Oil field was just visable on the horizan and I was thinking I was in for a long walk when a convoy of 5 4WDs came along and one of them had a MAP gas torch. The cable had broken at the nipple on the end -the guy with the torch melted the solder holding the nipple on the broken bit of cable and stuck it one the remainder and off we went again. All of 15minutes  Shortened the cable about 1" but it was drivable

I have found that cables usually break because they have been fitted wrong. If they are kinked or too tight they will wear out. If they are adjusted wrong they will be under too much load at full throttle.
The way to adjust them is to have 99% throttle with the foot flat on the floor with 1% slack.

If your cable breaks in the middle of nowhere you can jam the throttle open about 30% with a rock or stick and drive it using the key or clutch to control speed. (This will get you out of trouble in the middle of nowhere) Don't try to go too far as you need to concentrate. I would not advise doing this unless it is an emergency.

I pulled the wire off my Driving lights when i broke a cable after being a Marshal in a Mini Car Club trial in the Wombat State Forrest. Tied it to the carby, wrapped it around the SU and in through the firewall. Tied it around a biro to make it easier on the hand.

It lasted from Daylesford region to Ballarat.
