Thee roof vent and non removable grille tends to points to a UK spec van.

No Travellers had these features. But I have seen an NZ spec van which had a genuine traveller back seat which appeared to be factory fitted. Maybe they fitted Traveller rear seats to vans by special order for the forces or somethjing.

Ok - the filler is on the drivers side right at the back but down fairly low on the panel. The rear seat folds flat? Weird.... battery is behind driver on a little tray but mounted off the ground.

Hope this helps.....

Brett, I saw the same in NZ too. In the parts manual its referred to as "van with wooden load floor" its the same as an estate in the back, but with fixed windows. As far as I know they were only made in the UK, for the export market, its possible one made it here.

I reckon this one is a van with a rear seat conversion. Are there any storage bins in the back beside the seat?

I'm hanging to see photos of this thing.

But my money is on a Van with a rear seat conversion (BMC fitment) as well.

Me too :) There used to be quite a few of these in the UK. You could buy one (without side windows) and not have to pay purchase tax; this made them the cheapest vehicle you could buy in the UK.

Then, without telling the tax man, you could fit side windows (or not) and buy a rear seat conversion kit from your local BMC dealer....

Cheers, Ian

Yeah, and you were limited to a 35mph speed limit if you had a commercial vehicle. But fitting a small gas cooker automatically made it a camper and the limit was removed!!

That isn't a gas cooker - it's a nitrous bottle :) You could exced 35 as long as you had windows......oh, but then you were no longer commercial and had to pay tax...

As an Italian friend explained when I asked if the police fined you for speeding....."only if they catch you" :)

Cheers, Ian

Even in 1961, I doubt an 850 van was up to outrunning the police!

my van is fixed grile, with a woden boot floor and spare wheel under the very rear floor, also has a woden rear seat with a thin squab, and 2 small rectangular windows each side in the rear.
Theres a few like mine in nz so assume to be factory, bmc conversion.

That sounds like the one I saw over there.

Not really a BMC conversion, but built like that from the start. The traveller and countryman were based on the more upmarket standard of trim and "wooden load floor" van must have been a sort of poverty pack estate.

I've always been interested in vans and estates and the only place I've ever read about your van is in the parts manual for the estate. They don't seem to even know about them in the UK. If I hadn't seen that one in NZ (Itchen St, Oamaru, 16th November 2001) I wouldn't believe they ever made them.

The rear seat kit allowed it to become a windowless Estate. The original cost was
15 pounds for the conversion.
This was in England but in Australia the conversions were often done by ' back seat conversoin ' companies the one in my 68 van was done by a mob at Bankstown Airport the Question I want to know is why did Sutherland hostpital buy this car new to use as its laundary vehicle?
