I considered that first, but unlike my arrangement you have to take that thing off and clean it each time. What a PITA.. :!:
I just slide the 2 magnets off the old filter and onto the new one. The crud gets binned with the filter. 8)

Same -I'm using the magnets off of a old hard drive and put them on the bottom of the oil filter 8)

Question is it better to place the magnet on the side of the filter or on the bottom? I place mine on the side..

It won't matter, the filter media is well clear of the bottom.
Put them near the bottom (on the finger grips of a spin-on) or on the bottom.
