it doesn't matter what locks you have, you need to make your car less attactive to theives...

if someone wants to get it.... they will... and you'll end up with a broken window and/or stuffed locks/panels...

you may aswell leave it unlocked and have a very loud alarm and a couple of good imobilisers...

How does a cut off switch work?

cuts power from the battery so you can't start it. best to hide the switch

a fuel cut off switch works well, the theief can only get a little way down the street before then engine cuts out.

a lock may only keep the good people out, but the good people dont need to be kept out.

I have a cut off switch and if i didnt have that, well they would have got the whole car.
The locks that i have a worn, hence the new locks.
And i feel i will build my car to how i want it, why should i let d%^$&h^ds dictate how i build it?

The car was in my carport under a light. So i dnt think it was a random.

Cheers guys

try securing a Moke  - pull the coil lead out and take it with you.

I don't want to give any ideas to crooks but Solex locks are useless on Minis.
An immobiliser is also useless (unless you fit a fuel cut off) A lot of people think an immobilser is the be-all and end-all of security. But they can be bypassed on a Mini in about 15 seconds.

I used to actually remove my steering wheel and take it with me. Can't steal a car without one of those. Had a 13in wheel so it wasn't such a big thing to lug around. I worked over at Cooparoo and had to leave the car in an open carpark till the ealy hours of the morning (night shift). And it gave you a pretty good weapon to have with you whilst you walked to and from the car. But as far as imbo's just breaking in to steal what ever stuff you have in there, locks are great but that just leaves your windows, and they won't hesitate one second to smash them to gab a bag that is in plain sight.

all i can think of is that mr bean pisode where he goes on the picnic, and is pulling his lunch out of his suitcase and he pulls out the steering whel  then it cuts to the guy trying to nick his car, he gets it running and everything then goes for the steering wheel and...nothing

i know were all sick of bean anecdotes but i thought it was worth a giggle. sorry

its a good isea though, if you dont mind lugging it around with out. you'd have to turn to lock so the car wouldnt be able to be pushed on a trailer

I park my Clubman in an open carpark every day -- only real security is a Clublock on the steering wheel. Eventually I'll fit an electronic fuel pump & hide a switch for it.. that'll probably wait until the mech. pump dies

I try and keep it free of anything valuable when I park it, but it does have a CD player & a few nice gauges which I'm sure would attract the scum. Lately (thanks to the recent thefts reported by other Ausmini'ers) I've been taking my coil lead with me when I park it. That adds a layer of protection to the car, but doesn't stop someone putting an elbow through a window..

kids tried to set my celica on fire but i never had a prob with my mini, the kids threw lit cigerrets in my through a crack in where the front drivers window and the rear window meet, with the mini i have put a imoblesier, its mounted somewhere that won't be mentioned publicly 8) only sends power to the alarm(yet to purchased) and it self,

now i know it can be bypassed easy, but to find the immobilser, and follow the wiring then find a suitable connection to conduct enough current to turn the engine would be a wild goose chase

the fuel cut off switch is a good idea but park on busy road, return to your car start it and pull out infront of someone with out turning that switch on,

I've removed the location of the immobiliser

A cutoff switch on the battery in the boot, with a 10A circuit breaker across it (to power alarm and radio presets) is a good idea, IMO.

So if I was to run a wire from the soleniod to the coil and hold a screwdriver across the solenoid posts the immobiliser would stop it running?
