Matt68,
where did you get the gas chuck? I've tried several hydraulic places, Pertek etc and their eyes just glaze over and I get some very strange looks when I try to explain what it actually is.
Anybody know where you can buy one in Melbourne? I've got a picture of the gas chuck from the US site but I guess I'll have to take it with me next time I get enthused enough to start looking again.

Ron,

I got mine through "Parker" will dig out the receipt when i get back to town next week.

Matt

For everyone who is looking to make their own hydro pump;

The gas chuck fitting is far superior to the tractor tyre filling valve, and a very different thing. I have tried both!

Cheers

Those two pics are the spitting image of my pump, except i had a correct sized nut brazed onto the end of the grease gun hose fitting. The gas chuck and the grease gun hose have different threads, so one fitting won't do it.

Excellent link!!

Thanks Matt68,
Had another look at the Parker site and found the gas chuck when I entered the part No. They have a sales outlet in Dandenong but there is a Parker agent in South Croydon, about 5 mins from home.
I picked up the tractor tyre water filler fitting on a recent trip to Uncle Sam territory but it doesn't have the ability to depress the schrader valve pin from the outside, but it does have a bleed valve attached. Looks like I can sort something out which will allow any air in the pump pipe to be bled before depressing the schrader valve pin and make it easy to dump the hydro fluid quickly to get rid of any air in the system without the need for the vacuum pump that I was contemplating.

What I do with my pump is leave the fitting loose on the schrader valve and pump the air out of the hose till fluid comes out and then tighten it up and pump away.
My pump does not hold the schrader vavle open, it uses the schrader as a non return valve.

Mine does that too, I just purge the line by giving 1 pump then screw the fitting on.
I use a Mini clutch MC, works fine but I need to keep topping it up after every 10 or 12 strokes. Next time I'll use a Clubby one with the big reservoir..

Yep, that's how i do it too, except i have also 'opened' the schraeder valve with the gas chuck fitting, and allowed fluid to fill the line, then disengaged it and used the schraeder valve as a one way valve while pumping up.

Either way seems to work.

You don't need a gas chuck or a tractor water filler valve at all, Just put a reducer on flexible hose, drill a hole in a metal tyre cap and silver solder it on the reducer..You have to make or put another rubber in the cap so it seals. To fill the lines take of the front displacer hose off at the union in the engine bay, pump fluid in until you can see it at the union, pour some fluid down the front displacer hose to eliminate as much air as possible screw it back on with loctite gas sealer on threads..and pump away! Dad had a spare grease gun, cost $15 for a flexible hose, and the same for antifreeze...cheap as don't waste money on all these fittings you dont really need....Thats my 2 cents worth..cheers!

I understand what every one is talking about re, purging and then pumping up to pressurise the system, but

When I had mine pumped up with the original factory pump there was a section that actually sucked out what was in the system, both fluid and air (if there was any) to a point where there was a vacuum, then the new fluid was allowed to enter and then the pump was used to pressurise the system.

It seems that these home made systems only pressurise, not evacuate the system. This would result in a not as good end result wouldn't it. It could have old fluid and air in the system :!:

Cheers
Steve

The system i described is if the whole thing was empty from the start,Until you can get it to a proper machine..Or pump it up leave, drive it for a while and let fluid air out of the valve and pump it up again,if you do that a few times there won't be much air left in there..I have heard of making a vacuum out of a venturie type fitting for the air compressor..But there must be a home made vacumm set up somewhere!! Anyone made one???? I live in a small country town ''no pump, vacumm here!!'' So i'll pump it up until i can get it to the city and get it done properly...Aparently you can drive them at 30mph empty without any harm.. So getting some fluid in there is better than none!!
