Hmm sounds like she is running far to lean. Manifold leak? Check to see that it's fitting flush.

What spacer did you end up getting , doe is have a vacuum outlet on it that isn't sealed properly perhaps ? I know it sounds obvious but is worth checking anyway , were all the surfaces clean and you used new gaskets/good gasket cement ?

All new gaskets no cement. Completely stripped and cleaned.

I didn't see any outlets on the spacer.

Does it sound like its getting to much air from somewhere?

Pretty sure that larger vacuum fitting on the carb has a hose that goes to the charcoal canister as well as the one from the fuel bowl vent. Just block it off if you don't have the canister. The fuel bowl does need to be vented somehow to equalise the pressure when the fuel is pumped in.

If you can make a warm engine run with the choke out then it is definitely running too lean. You need to screw the adjuster out (clockwise looking from the top of the carb) maybe half a turn at a time until you get it to run. Then do the fine adjustment.

well shes up and running again...hooray. its pretty loud and you can hear the carby from in the car now.

the manifold was a little out which didn't help, and i unblocked the second pipe coming from the float and watched the difference of fuel on the bridge no wonder it didn't work.

I was thinking about it this morning as i drove to work in my mini......

It's probably not a good idea to leave that second pipe open on the float? If its not where can it go?

I was thinking a T connector to the breather hose? Or is it ok to leave out in the open?

The second pipe on your float bowl is a breather, as you discovered it is to allow air to enter when the fuel level changes, or you get a vacuum. Your other carburettor had exactly the same breather except it was a pin hole not a pipe, so really it makes no difference. As long as your float level is correct and the float valve is functioning correctly, fuel shouldn't come out.

Of course that is only half correct, as I have once had a carburettor with the correct float level and a new float valve that was working 100%, and when idling the fuel came pouring out the breather. Never figured that one out :?

yeah when i did my first run a couple of days ago fuel came out, at least i thought it did but at the same time the float chamber wasn't tight enough and was leaking.

I haven't noticed fuel coming out of it since its been running well cold or warm.

Guess i'll have to keep an eye on it.

Yeah keep an eye on it. At least with the overflow pipe you can put some fuel hose on it to direct it away from the hot exhaust.

I used to get fuel coming out of my twin 1.5"s - I ended up putting a plastic peanut butter jar near the wiper motor connected to the carbs with some bits of clear hose.... not that good having a container half full of petrol in the engine bay tho
