I'm with Doc and 9YaTaH, I had my steering let go in exactly this spot once, luckily I felt it slip one spline around and got off the road before it killed both me and my wife. Definitely not something to take a chance with.

Baracade had it go there too. Car proceeded forwards when turning a corner, demolished a fence... :!:

With the number of times these rack warnings come up...I think there should a WARNING stickey in How Tos and How To for overhaul for the more advanced mechanically

Last week I tried to get my steering wheel off and after lots of pulling and bashing it wouldn't budge so I just tightened up the nut and left it. but, now I checked and there is the same free play in the steering wheel, about an inch along the shaft.

So looks like I'll be rebuilding my rack next weekend, so what are the consumables in a rack? and how do u get a steering wheel off, I could get the stock one off easy but this one won't budge...
