Well, we're interested, looking at accomodation etc already!
Probably will fly into Wellington and drive up the day before, as we've done Auckland to Rotorua and above....

1. Is it only on the Saturday, or Sunday too??
2. How long is the drive up from Wellington, on a Friday?
:P

The official stuff is on the Sat only. However, most of us go down Fri night and back on Sunday for a very social weekend, esp Sat night!!! From Wellington, 4-5 hours. :D

Hi GT,

Say someone was staying at NP. Everyone I have ever talked to says do not go through the National Park to Taupo/Rotorua....that makes me want to do it even more!!! I have relatives in NP and I couldn't come into the country without catching up with them!! I have driven the Awakino Gorge route several times...and up from Wellington also.

Has anyone got any experience with the road through the National Park?? Cheers, Mick

Hi Mick,

Anyway you choose from NP to Taupo will take you through some of the most rugged country in the North Island and some of the windiest roads (exact opposite of the Melbourne to Sydney highway)! If I were doing it, I'd look to go down to Wanganui (via Stratford - mostly easy roads) then up to National Park and across toTaupo. This way would be much easier than up the middle by turning left in Stratford (check out www.wises.co.nz >maps) which looks very twisty but the scenery will be outstanding - I've never driven this road!). Otherwise it's up through Awakino to Taumaranui and across. some of these roads are liable to closure from snow, but this should only become a problem later in the year. National Park to Taupo is the easiest part of the journey! Wangnui to NP - nice drive. If winter comes early, you might be able to get some skiing in as well if you want as the fields have opened in late may occasionally before.

Cheers, Gavin :D

Thanks Gav, yeah quite familiar with the gorge and Wellington to NP. Went to speedway at Stratford on one visit!!

Bumper Sticker: "Wangaunui the only thing missing is U"..don't forget to feed the ducks on the way through!!

OK....so Strat to Taupo....whats the chance of snow etc at that time of the year?

Twisty?? I've driven over the Rimutaka's mate!! Cheers, Mick

Early June - not much chance at that level, only up on the mountains. Ski fields don't generally open until July so should be Ok. Usually only the Desert Rd (Waiouru to Turangi) has problems and then only much later on in the year.

Wow..good incentive...I have been checking Rental Car prices from Parmy....anyone got any exoperience with the (ehh hem) "budget" companies ...you know..1997 Toyotas etc.

Now has Don got one of those boards that they have at amusement parks....if you aren't this height ...NO RIDE (me 6 foot two!).

I'm a possibility.....

would you know if Brent Kugener is still in the mini scene over there he is , or was last known at Rangiora just north of christchurch. and would probably be about 50 ish now.
he did a fair amount of 7 racing, He was the first full on mini-a-holic i new.. had race cars , marcos etc but havent seen or heard of him for years. he is an automotive machinist by trade, and was working in christchurch. his kids are probably old enough to be driving now, think his son is NZ bmx champion....
Would be interested to know if hes still at it

Getting back to the start of this thread. That is a good website, lots of pics and information. Anybody in NZ want to send us over some info and good high-res pics for The Mini Experience magazine?
Any details on the Broadspeed? Is it a genuine car? Built in UK or Australia? An easy way to tell is the taillights (Oz Broadspeed used normal taillights, swapped left to right, UK Broadspeed used taillights from Singer Gazelle) and the doors - Aussie Broadspeed has wind-up windows and quarter vents (if original doors are used). Either way, it is a rare car - more so if it is an Aussie one - so we would like some details and pics for the magazine.
As for Mini racing in Australia - there is going to be a heap of Minis running in the Group N races at Phillip Island this weekend. Always exciting with so many Bricks. Also, there is a three meeting series for Super Minis at Wakefiled Park. Next meeting is in July, contact Brian Walden for details - 02 4774 2633
Watto.
