So Uncle Alex was dead by then eh!!!!

Mick - please note my enthusiasm for this motor although originally waxed, has waned.

I am starting to think that the 4 cylinder class at Goulburn Speedway might become an option.
As you can see from Micks photo there is an air of quality about the 1984 Austin products. The Montego was the very last car to wear the Austin badge and looking at the photos you can see why.

The A series is well disguised in the engine bay. It looks like they went all out on the inlet manifold design.

If you look at the carby you can see where I pulled off the stepper motor that runs the choke via computer (a Lucas computer!).

Mike, I appologise for getting your hopes up, but if you want a car with a very large boot for collecting firewood this could be just the thing (don't forget to light the wood before closing the bootlid.)

The rocker cover alone is an engineering masterpiece  Reminds me of a hospital pi** tank! Any wonder the company went broke.

Sorry, never seen one of those before, it gets my F***ed Unit award.

hahaha Mick - gotta laugh - sorry :?

Forgeting the 1929 chevvy manifold is the head a true cross flow that bolts up to the standard A series block. ???? Is that why the those in the know are making guarded bids ?????? A good dremel and there is 200 hp. ????

morris 1100,,, you should know me better than that by now :-) i can make almost anything fit almost anything else. nothing is too difficult, & the imposible just takes a little longer :-)

It`s just that the montego/maestro cranks have a very much longer/thicker snout/flange where the flywheel faces up, but there`s not enough meat behind it to simply machine it back to make it line up with the spridget set up. it`s just not worth the effort to try such a conversion

Both the Bimmer Twinky cyl head conversion & the turbo alloy V8 conversions are pretty easy in comparison

Have you got the montego/maestro inlet manifold still??? still a pic of it up here for everyone to have a laugh at will you??? :-) stuipd backards arse-about things they are, no wonder British Leyland went down hill, producing stuff like that makes it look like they wanted to close the doors :-)

& i am serious about the con rods & cyl head, send them up to me & i`ll send you a drivers side engine steady braket for your 1100 :-)
I figured that if you said it couldn't be done then there was no chance. If anyone could have it would have been you.
Thanks for letting me know what the difference is.
So a drivers side steady bracket! You are currently the highest bidder. (do you have the automatic badge that goes with the steady bracket? 8) )

So we have worked out that it is good for a head, conrods and a HIF 44 and that inlet manifold has to be worth a fortune for scrap.

So, of all the montego's you bought a 1300 one??? With that build quality, imaging what the 2L turbo one's are like!

I feel there's altogether too much dissing of the Montego on this thread. What a fine looking car.

no Meds, only a constant supply of Coke Zero and Twix bars.

Anyway - what's so wrong with it - it's got a bit of the original Range Rover & Rover SD1 about it don't you think??

Who said I bought it?
I got it from a lady in Melbourne who moved here from England and took her car with her. So it could be the only 1.3 Montego in Aus! (There are a couple of others with the bigger motors) She used it to teach people to drive. So it actually has two extra pedals on the passenger side! (at no extra cost!)
It got in a multi car bingle and damaged both bumpers and soon after that the bonnet catch failed and the bonnet hit the screen. It then run out of rego and they decided to buy a new car. the Montego sat around for a while until I found it and started to rebuild it. I didn't get very far as to many things kept failing before I had finished the previous thing. :x

I will try to fit the front bumper and grille on the weekend and take more photos.

Should put the rocker cover on a Mini, you could cut a hole in the bonnet and top up the oil without even lifting the bonnet! :D

Stinkey, you took the words right outa my mouth :-)

& Morris 1100, i might have the Auto badge lying around here somewhere, i`d swap you that for the manifold, but i`d only accept the con rods for the steady bar kit :-)

kidding, just kidding

I am keen on the con rods tho , mate, buddy, pal, chum, lick lick suck suck,,, ok, maybe not the lick & suck part

:-)

If you take the car the con-rods will be included. Why are the rods special? Is there something I should know? (are they gold plated?) :D

Back to wondering about fitting into a spridget, you said that you can't modify the crank to fit the spridget flywheel, could you modify a different flywheel to fit the crank? (it might need a spacer between the block and the clutch housing?)
