Hi Guys,
Regarding English Cooper S's, I have noted that there seems to have been quite a variation in placements and I have a hunch they were not done with any form of template, but maybe by eye.

Regards
Al

The three "S" lids I have have the holes all edzackery the same. Using the centrelines for all the holes, the Morris Cooper script is 133 mm below the boothandle.

My guess is FTN345, MCS69, SMK 269, 663H & JW 0689 are kosher.

Over to you Simon :lol: .

well... I was going to say those last 3...

I've never told anyone this, but my bootlid appears to have originated on a clubman. It has a couple of fill marks inside from where a clubman badge would sit. I reckon said clubman must've been Camino Gold, cos there aren't any traces of other colours... I actually bought a new MORRIS COOPER badge because the one on there was cracked, then I cracked the new one putting it on because the holes weren't in the right spot. I'd filed them, but still pushed too hard :( it looks wavy in the photo

can you do some measurement on your bootlids? the vertical red line goes straight through the boot handle :)

are the holes for the 'S' on that centre line?

nice work!

OK, now that I've had a few beers, i can confidently say:

A=128mm
B=145mm
C=173mm

The top "S" hole in on the red centre line, but the bottom one is off-set to the left by 4mm

It is probably easier for me to do a template than explain the other measurements. PM me if you think that would help.

O' Yeah of litte faith! BMC body stampings wern't that bad.

You reckon they were prestamping Cooper specific bootlid panels at the factory (that would mean specific deluxe panels, specific minimatic panels and specific 850 panels too, oh and different stampings for the cooper and cooper s when they were in production at the same time) - rather than just have a bloke with an air drill and wooden template drill holes as per requirments?

Having looked at three bootlids in the raw, i think you are probably right. The holes look like they are drilled & not punched. However, the measurements are all consistent so a template was probably used.......... :wink:

I made a rubbing of my 66 Cooper S boot lid today. I think it is original, but I have no way to prove it. There were about 40 rust holes on the inside and no sign of a rear collision.
As for the information - use it, don't use it - no worries. Just adding information to this thread.

I measured from the bottom of the hole for the handle to the center of the holes for the S badge.

Top 73.20mm (measured with digital caliper)
Bottom 90cm (measured with digital caliper)

Below are scans of the rubbing. (keep in mind that this paper was on the curve of the boot lid, so you might need a flexible ruler for it to match.

The script holes look too close to the 'S'? I am not sure the script is low enough.

This is the only picture I can find of the boot lid prior to work. The "S" was missing, but the paint had faded around it and it looked about right.

Image

I need new badges - maybe it's time to order some prior to paint.

Thanks

Mark
