The episode last night was circa 2002, note that they were talking about the MINI just being released, and about buying a 3 year old 1999 model Mondeo cheap.

The large dude is Jason Dawe...
Quote:
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jason Dawe was a presenter on the Top Gear television show on its first season after it was relaunched. His main part in the show was to present different bargains for used cars, as opposed to the super car reviews and entertaining motoring challenges, which were done by the two other presenters, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond. James May replaced Jason as the third presenter in Top Gear's second post-relaunch series.

That was in 2004 haven't Holden since killed off daewoo all together? Or was that just wishful thinking :D

I've also been told by a friend (but haven't confirmed whether it is actually true) that he looked at buying a Captiva. When he opened the Door it said Hyundai on the kick plates. So are they a Santa Fe in a different guise?

Isn't badge engineering wonderful? Oh hang on, Austin, Morris, Riley, Wolsely........ hey it was wonderful back then. :D

My old Boss wanted to buy a Honda Legend, but his wife wouldn't let him as a relative of hers had been tortured by the Japanese in the war. To appease her he bought a Rover 825i instead. He just made sure she never opened the bonnet.

GM killed off Daewoo here as a brand, but the Barina and Viva come from the Daewoo plant.
The current Barina is a rebadged Daewoo and was rubbished by the Oz media as such- I dunno if the Viva was designed from a clean sheet of paper or was an existing Daewoo model

The Barina, Viva and Captiva all come Daewoo. The Captiva was designed as a world car but is assembed in the Woosi factory.

Some of the engines come from Fishermans bend and then come back wraped in tinfoil as Holdens

Remember when Daewoo has a free reign to build whatever it liked and was not under the control of the mighty GM empire?

Getting (slightly) back on subject - isn't it interesting to see how slower the show was and how more serious they were back in Series 1 - like they were trying to find their way to create a new show to differentiate it from the old format and figure out how to stretch it to 1 hour at the same time?

You can see that they were trying to do different things though - some of them worked and some did not - getting 2 great car designers in probably seemed like a good idea at the time but it just didn't work on TV - especially stretched over however many minutes they had in Saturday's show.

I don't doubt that they'd be great guys to have a chat with but it was all a bit dull really.

Likewise the Aston DB7 review, very long and more like the old Top Gear, no sign of the style of photography that they use these days either.

That being said some of the more recent multi-car reviews are over-long and over-indulgent and begin to seriously drag too.

Jason Dawe and his used car bumpf was god-awful boring (practical maybe but not entertaining)

The grannies doing donuts thing was good though and i suppose an indication of things to come...I think it's interesting watching back these old ones as we'll be able to see the evolution into the slick entertainment it has since become.
