KB is the youngest of the Byron family of five children and I am the eldest. Each of us has been involved in competitive motorsport.

Along the way we have met some wonderfully iconic and talented people in all forms of motorsport.

My late mother took to heaven with her the memories of having the Japanese rally team for Nissan rebuilding a SSS in our front yard on Hawkesbury Road Westmead (a major road). It wasn't always a pleasant memory though when at 3.00 am in the carport next to her bedroom, the transplanted engine fired for the first time sans exhaust.

The motorsport names our family knows/knew at a personal level is really quite extensive and we regard each name with fondness. KB has just PM'ed me with news that another former motorsport icon is facing a battle that ultimately will confront us all.

got mine from Arthur as well. I made a bracket to sit it higher as I have a race seat with high sides and I want it to fall to hand easier.

A hydraulic handbrake is not a parking brake and operates on the normal wheel cylinders. Normal pressure from the master cylinder will pass straight through the handbrake cylinder to the rear wheel cylinder. Just like if you pressurise the reservoir to bleed the brakes. Cable handbrake operates as per normal.

When I picked it up Stewart was preparing 3 180Bs for the African Safari. He also does my brother's dyno tuning. He knows how to ring a few HP out of an Autronic EMS on a 4AGE.

Be aware that Arthur might be busy, so be patient.

cheers
Michael

so what is the penalty for being caught with this, i know it illegal but is it the same issue with NOS bottles, you can have the in the car bolted to something but the solinoid and the pumbing lines can't be conected for normal road use

I actually heard on from someone somewhere that the handbrake no longer has to be an emergency brake, since Commodores came out with 4 wheel disks on a fancy model (SS or something) and had such a poor rear brake setup that the handbrake couldn't stop it - so the ADR was changed to specify that it onlyl had to be a holding brake, not an emergency brake....

my source may not have been reliable, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was not true... interesting tho

as for 2 wheel cylinders at the back.... one of the Hotbricks guys has this setup on the back of his Moke - too much screwing around.

for rego, surely a bolt through a small bracket welded to the base of the lever, and through another to the body would make it legal - on top of that, make the main part of the handle removable

For anyone outside NSW, I don't think it'd ever get noticed, much less questioned if someone from the law did notice

I haven't fitted one yet, but it's on a list of future mods for my Moke.

I was told to move the rear limit valve FORWARD of the hydraulic handbrake, not just gut it. If you gut it the rear brakes will lock up too easwily when using the footbrake. I just fitted a new limit valve out of a later moke in the side box and fitted a simple T piece in the rear subframe. The advantage of the late model limiter is that you can adjust rear brake bias by altering the angle of the valve (by bending the bracket) as per Vizard's HTMYM.

My plan is to mount the hydralic handbrake cylinder under the passenger seat and make the handle poke straight up and removable. Anyone who knows the dark blue "Coakley Moke" from Victoria will know what I mean when I say I'm replicating that system.

The cylinder used for the handbrake is a Land Rover clutch cylinder part. About $50 trade apparently.

The master cylinder we used to use ( a few decades ago now  ) was from a Hillman Imp. A great little car that I doubt many of our younger members would ever have seen.

Here's my bro's Imp- bought new in 1965, he did 200,000+ miles then it was parked in his shed for 20+ years until last year when he restored it.
This pic from last year is the original acrylic, it's since had a 2 pack paint job in the same colour. 8)

My Dad had an Imp in the mid-70's. He reckoned it was an unreliable pile of poo. Probabaly all problems that could be overcome, but Dad just wanted reliable transport to get him to work. It was traded in for a second-hand Corona for Mum and Dad took over her Mazda 808.

I wouldn't mind an Imp one day.

enough about Imps and old racing drivers, you fogies!

which layout?

vertical and pull towards (or push away from) you, or on the floor and pull up?

Who you calling a fogie? :P

I'm thinking vertical and pull towards me for the Moke. But a more normal "pull up from the floor" type would probably be suitable for a Mini.
