I just went out and had a quick look, it's possible that mine may have originally had the magic wand as there is a plate fixed over where it would have been.. It's done very well though, could it be a factory plate? The owners did mention something about the gear stick, but I thought they were just saying that they had to replace the knob, (as it has a 'clubman' type knob on the gearstick, that i'll have to replace). The push button start is definitely original though..

he car is by no means a pristine vehicle, but I think it's pretty genuine and original overall. I didn't pay much for it either  and it came with a road worthy certificate :D

My 65 Deluxe has the magic wand hole covered over by the factory and generally the giveaway is that it has the original paint over it (ie they did it before painting).

If yours has been covered over I would suggest that it probably had magic wand gear change originally. But realistically, remote change is heaps better if you actually want to drive the car!

Hmmm,

If all 1098 engines (from 69/70 era) were fitted with the 4 synchro gearbox casing (22G1128) then doesn't that mean they all had the remote extension?

:?

Cheers

Matt

This is what confuses a lot of people, there was a magic wand gearchange that went onto the 4 syncro case. It is quite an ingenious bit of gear, I will try to find my bits and get a photo. It uses the diff housing of the 4 syncro box and it has a tin plate to cover the bottom and hold the gearstick in place instead of the long remote extension.

Most body shells have a plate welded over the magic wand hole in the floor from the factory, even my Cooper S has one. It is very neatly welded in place.

Mokes had that setup too in the late 60s early 70s.

Here are the pics of the magic wand 4 syncro box (actually it is a Mk2 Cooper S box with the long stick and the tin plate added for the photo.)
The bits under the tin plate are different to the normal remote change but they are easy to fit. (I shoved a bit of rag under the plate to hold the stick in the right spot for the photo.)

Mokes & vans got that shift set up, there were plenty around "Back in the day"

just watch the little alloy pivot thing with the pin in the guts of it, (P/N 22a1832 if my memory serves me correctly) they tend to wear & wear the stick too & end up a very sloppy shifter indeed,,, the brand new factory items were made with varying pin depths/heights/protrusiion lengths (if you get my drift) some new ones the pin was hardly sticking out at all & others were sticking out way too much & would lock the shifter up when bolted in... we used to repair these quite commonly.

Lovely looking car tho, well done on your purchase

Actually that is a good identifying point. The engine number should have /Ta/ for the remote control centre change gearbox or /U/ for the magic wand shift.

Wow this thread's really taken off in my absence..

The original engine number in the owners manual is 10YJUH.

The engine was replaced in 1999 with a mini K engine (from the same era), prefix 10YCTAH.

I assume this means the car originally had a 'magic wand' shift but was replaced with remote shift in 1999.

As the story goes, the owners elderly mother drove this car around Stawell when she was in her late 90's. Her family wanted her to give up her license as she was too old to be driving, but she refused to give up driving her mini. So they thought the best they could do was take it into Link Automotive and get them to do "whatever it takes to make this car as safe as possible". This is when they replaced the seats with the high-backed ones, and replaced the engine. The owners didn't think there was anything wrong with the old engine..

I'd like to know what happened to the original front seats. Apparently they were in good nick. The back seats are red vinyl, but sort if with a fine texture pattern to it, kind of like an old table cloth :) . They are similar fabric to what I've seen in a mini 850.

On a side note, I'll have to confirm but I think the engine has the temp sender in it (as it's from a mini K) just not connected to anything. I assume it'd be a relatively simple job to wire in a temp gauge.? I'd like to get a little, simple 'smiths' gauge or something that won't detract from the car, and mount it below the dash shelf.
