Give Cono a call at Minicraft in WA.
He's done a few bashes and would have some tips for you.
Check him out in The Mini Experience Issue 9.

i might wait till i have finished ny current project... morris major series 1
What safety features and mods would everyone recommend for a mini, remmbering its gotta be road registered, kept near as original as possible as per rules and regs
Full roll cage, half cage, or no cage?
13inch, 12inch, or 10 inch rims?
disk brakes a must
normal suspension upgrades with hilos, adjustable shocks, and so on..
Race seat or a standard seat?
Front sump guard
twin tanks
internal brake and fuel lines or not?
funky roof rack to store beer and swag.... oh and spares I guess
do i use a clubman or roundy?

Variety bashes are on all year round. I guess focus on an event, pay entry fees and work from there.

you'll have a blast doing the bash for sure.
I built up a couple of bash cars as an apprentice.
We made an EH wagon into the flinstone mobile, a dodge phoenix into a space machine it even had full silver leather recaros. great fun!

Definitely get in touch with Cono at Mini craft.

Image

I drove his Mr Bean Variety Club Bash Mini from Perth to Albany and back, and spent a week in it putting around Perth.

The car is really well put together and handled the 100-odd km I did on the dirt with aplom.

Cono has done five or six Bashes, including a couple of the really big interstate ones, and has loads of experience with the Mini on this sort of event. So, he would be ideal to talk to about what you would need.

I've done nine similar events - Camp Qaultiy Capers (5), Canteen Treks (2) and a couple of others.

Two of those were done in my Mini van, and two in Mokes. My cars were basically mechanically completely standard and although they took a beating, they survived without much problem. You need to be very well prepared, and it almost goes without saying that you will encounter problems, so you will need to carry plenty of spares and tools, and because no-one else will have compatible parts, you will need to be completely self-sufficient. (a good service crew would be essential).

Good luck with the project. If you do take it on, and enter a Mini in the Bash, how about doing a story on your adeventures for The Mini Experience.

Cheers,
Watto.

the whole idea is to have fun while raising money for the variety club charity which supports children in many ways.

it helps to have a theme for the car. a friend of mine did it in a charger with not nearly as much preparation as some of the cars. you get more sponsorship if you can generate publicity for the sponsors. my friend just happened to be entering an orange charger when the dukes of hazzard movie was being released. he contacted the movie promoters and got in on the act. see pics :D

What safety features and mods would everyone recommend for a mini, remmbering its gotta be road registered, kept near as original as possible as per rules and regs
Full roll cage, half cage, or no cage? no cage or half cage at most. you will not be travelling at more than normal road speeds. no other bash car i have seen has a cage.
13inch, 12inch, or 10 inch rims? whatever you have. more important is to gain graound clearance with the suspension as all end up with the same rolling diameter, except moke 13 inch with high profile tyres
disk brakes a must yeah i would
normal suspension upgrades with hilos, adjustable shocks, and so on.. hi los raised as high as you can reasonably go, plus adjustable heavy duty lower arms and tie rods. these will allow you to restore the geometry after raising the car. you will possibly be restricted at the rear by how much travel you can get out of a shock absorber.
Race seat or a standard seat? standard seats are the norm, but you may want something more comfortable for the long distance. the organiser wont want to see you in a full 6 point harness and race seat with your helmet intercoms etc. this is not a rally
Front sump guard yes and yes
twin tanks fill the boot with tank and put everything else on a roof rack. ie spare tyres, spares etc. you may have to mount the battery in the car so you can put extra tankage in the boot or get an odyssey deep cycle one and mount in the engine bay
internal brake and fuel lines or not? or plate over them. look at the vizard recommendations for strengthening everything for rallying in how to modify your mini and you will get the idea
funky roof rack to store beer and swag.... oh and spares I guess
do i use a clubman or roundy? your car, your choice

Variety bashes are on all year round. I guess focus on an event, pay entry fees and work from there.[b] i would prepare the car first, then pick the event and get sponsorship from there on. also a good idea to work on a number of ways to raise money outside getting sponsors. take the car to various events with a sign and hand a tin around. every bit helps.[/]b

didnt you say the car had to be 1970...that would rule out a clubby.

Depends on which bashes you do, some can have modern 4wds others have to be pre 1970, no 4wd's, must be kept stock standard exept for safety upgrades. THe bash I was looing at doing, cars must be pre- 1970............I guess that answers my question a roundy it is......

RE: your PM Justin.

Here's some photo's of when we did the Kidney Foundation's Circle Australia Rally Back in '96. May as well put them up for all, Hope they are of some help.
16,000km's in 26 days! Boy you value sleep after that! :o

Canberra, before we left:

Dash. Wayne got the seats from a wrecker, I can't remember what they were from? They were reclining and very comfy (which is the main thing!)

Rally start in Sydney.

Tasy somewere. After the front right Tie bar nut came off :o
We put the perspex sheild on the grill when the Weber kept Icing up - We weren't running a thermostat... don't ask  It was also good for keeping the Dizzy dry. The cut out is for the oil cooler.

Somewere? after we cleaned it...

Ooops!!! To fast through a creek crossing in S.A. Big hole in the gearbox!
Involved a very wet night in a paddock changing the gearbox. Thanks to the F100 backup vehicle we had a heap of spares!
Funny thing was that we had to Tow the F100 out with the mini the next morning because it was so boggy - LSD helps

Conclusion:
Build the car more for endurance than speed on an event like this. Mini's are pretty strong as standard, but there are plenty of small mods which are definitely worth doing (most of which have been mentioned). Hope some of the pictures are of help or enthuse you, I don't seem to have any shots of the detailed mods we did.

Please ask as many questions as you like.
