Pre-pay for fuel works well in America, I found once you're used to it it's no big deal.
They had to do it because they have even more law disregarders than we do.

Pre-pay works fine in the USA. I never found it a problem.

You either overpay and fill the car and then collect the change. (it is not that hard)
Or you pay for what you want (say $40) and then get your $40 of petrol and drive off.

It is not hard.

I am not having a shot or pulling your leg but I am truely pleased to see you are using the full "you" and not the "u"

Goodonya

Yes - this safeguarding the petrol is a worry. I think many amongst us think that the petrol companies are ripping us off anyway so why not steal the petrol. I know that we use a lot of petrol because you cant beat the distance and that our fuel bills have gone up $15 a tankfull in six months. Why ????

We beat Saddam didn't we and its not our fault his countrymen swung him by the neck.

Last time I looked, we were getting light Bass Strait crude to make petrol etc here with, and the imported crude was for making lube oils etc.
Malcolm Fraser way back when had the great? idea of charging world parity (Singapore spot price) for our crude. Who the hell now gets the rakeoff between its production cost and the parity price...?????????
The oil companies here bleat they they are making peanuts per litre of petrol, I don't believe it. 8)

And most US pumps have a credit card slot - no hanging about in the queue inside waiting to pay while some yokel decides he needs a couple of Cokes and new wiper blades and.......

Virtually everyone has a card, so, if you choose to use cash, there's no queue to hold you up anyway.

Cheers, Ian

What would we do in Australia if we want to pay by credit card?

As for putting swipes on the pumps, it will never happen due to the fact that service stations at best make 3 cents a litre on fuel (doesn't even come close to covering the costs). In order to be profitable rely on you walking through the shop and buying high margin groceries. Mobil first trialled card swipes at the pump 15 years ago and if it hasn't taken off by now....

You go inside and swipe the card, come out and fill the tank, go back and sign the receipt, leave. It is not that hard. If you want drinks and lollies you can get them when you go back to finish the transaction. It is very easy. (so easy even Americans can do it )

What do you mean "it will never happen"? I can go down the road right now and fill my truck or car by swiping a card without having to deal with a person.

Yes - even in downtown Gulgong which is so cosmopolitan that the milk bar stays open till eight on saturday nights, the bowsers have card swipe machines on them. The non english speaking Indian can sit in his late night bullet proof glass cage and monitor income.

I can get fuel by debit card at three a.m. in two of the three Gulgong fuel outlets.

Mine were held on with Allen Head bolts and Nylock's, and they were just ripped off, leaving the aluminium under the screw heads. The Holes in the plates would have been around 10-11mm after tearing, but that won't worry the Bastards that took them.
