Happened to me once. I realised what was happening and raced from Castle Hill home to Coogee at 9pm with my side lights only on well lit roads to conserve charge and turning off the lights at red ligts everywhere else. Was funny doing 130 over the Anzac Bridge in 4th to try and stay in low rev cruising all the time (yea deadly funny).
There was traffic on the Harris St exit so I cruised to the city and we lasted just till the exit from Anzac bridge. As soon as I got off the ramp it came to a rest graciously - I parked it and took a train to Kmart Bondi to buy a new battery to get me home.

Other people - older, wiser people tell me that if yours is the alternator with the external regulator (4TR module) then its usually the reg, that is buggered. Use a voltmeter (cummon they're as cheap as 9 bux for a crappy one) - with the engine on and all the electrics off even a crappy Lucas alt should maintain an above 12.5v charge. See if it rises with the engine on (battery is being charged) or falls (the alternator is supplying insufficient power so the engine draws current from the battery). And then try with your lights on etc. Maybe its just a loose belt.

Otherwise get the Bosch conversion and you'll never look back (more than 4 or 5 times).

I've found the Clubbie alternators with built in reg lots more reliable than the early 15ACs that Mike's talking about.

BTW Oz, I have Brad's `$170 recon Clubbie alternator' here still. Email sent.
