Looks like an English Shell due to the rain gutter having a pressing at the front instead of holes.

why would it have the fuel pump breather bung thing below the back seat and holes in the back subframe where a petrol pump bracket could go??

because, like I said already, it's an english 850 shell - standard fitment was an electric fuel pump, including the bung under the back seat....

the bung under the back seat doesn't necessarily mean it's a Cooper S, otherwise my traveller would be a Cooper S, and we know that ain't so

English Mk1 Mini with a lot of Aussie bits fitted.

SK: Morris and Austin Minis had the same spec trim for the same trim level (super-deluxe etc). Only the colours and badges differed.

BTW: My Traveller has the bung too and so does a mate's 66 Austin Super-Deluxe.

If you give us the chassis number we can probably make a positive ID. Unfortunately the chassis numbers on english cars were on a build plate that was screwed on the radiator cowl or front panel (not riveted), so they are often lost. The "FE" number in the photo is not the chassis number, but is often used as one by the rego authorities in Aus.

The big difference between the Austin and Morris Minis in the UK is the name of the place that sold them. Unlike Australia they still had seperate Austin and Morris dealers competing with each other for business. BMC Australia killed that idea before the Mini arrived.

Can you imagine having two different places in the one town selling the same car with different badges? And all working for the one company!

never heard of that happening..... Ford/Mazda, Holden/Toyota.... there was another one wasn't there?

I guess Austin/Morris was a bit different... but there was never an Austin Minor, or a Morris Healy Sprite, tho there was an MG Midget - and an MG 1100, an Austin Princess, a Morris 1100, and a Riley Kestrel

we had Austin Lancers and Morris Major, and the Wolsley variant whose name escapes me

Before BMC merged the Austin and Morris dealers the product range in Australia was very similar at both places...

Morris Minor <> Austin A40 Farina (both cars with the same A-series engine)
Morris Major Series II <> Austin Lancer MkII (the same B-series engined car with different grille and dash)
Morris Oxford <> Austin A60
Wolseley 15/60 <> Austin A99
MGA <> Austin Healey
Austin Healey Sprite

After the local amalgamation the product range was...
Morris 850
Morris Major Elite (replaced by the Morris 1100 in 64)
Austin Freeway (replaced by the Austin 1800 in 65)
Wolseley 24/80
MGB
Austin Healey Sprite.

The poms got lots of cars with different badges.
We got the Morris 1100 (and a handfull of Princess 1100s)
They got the Morris 1100, the Austin 1100, Riley Kestral, Wolseley 1100, Princess 1100, etc.

Yes there was. It was only available as a tin sided van. Austin didn't have a small van in their range at the time so they rebadge a Morris. The only thing that set it apart was a crinkly grille, where the Morris had slats and the front badge.
